2006 Suzuki Burgman 0.3L Petrol · WM56 VCY

The most recent MOT inspection on 09 February 2024 resulted in a pass with no recorded defects. Evaluating the overall maintenance trend, the vehicle appears to have moved from a period of instability between 2017 and 2018 into a much more stable and compliant phase. The earlier failures involving engine mountings and insufficient brake lever travel, alongside various tyre advisories, suggest that those specific mechanical concerns were addressed, as evidenced by the clean MOT results in the two most recent years. The recorded mileage of 24,184 miles is remarkably low for a twenty-year-old vehicle, representing an average annual usage of approximately 1,209 miles. While this suggests minimal mechanical wear on the engine and drivetrain, such low usage often indicates that the vehicle has spent extended periods stationary. In these circumstances, the primary mechanical risks shift from component wear to age-related degradation, where rubber, fluids, and seals deteriorate due to time and environmental exposure rather than physical friction. During a test drive, you should pay particular attention to the engine's stability and the responsiveness of the braking system. Given the previous major failure regarding engine mountings, listen for excessive vibration or unusual movement through the chassis, especially during acceleration or deceleration. The front brake lever must be tested for firm, consistent pressure; any sponginess or excessive travel could indicate air in the system or a failing master cylinder. Furthermore, inspect the brake discs for heavy corrosion or pitting, which can occur when a vehicle sits idle and the discs are not regularly cleaned by the friction of braking. A thorough physical inspection for age-related perishing is vital due to the low mileage profile. Examine the tyres for sidewall cracking or dry rot, as the rubber may have perished even if the tread depth remains high. Check all rubber elements, including fork seals and various hoses, for signs of hardening or fluid weeping. It is also recommended to verify the service history for evidence of time-based maintenance, such as regular brake fluid changes and oil replacements, to ensure that fluids have not become contaminated or degraded by moisture and oxidation during periods of standing.
