2005 Land Rover Discovery 2.7L Diesel · WU55 GCV

The vehicle remains roadworthy but the maintenance history indicates a clear trend of progressive mechanical wear and deferred component replacement. While the most recent test in December 2025 at 183,939 miles passed, it flagged a nearside front wheel bearing with slight play. This specific issue was also noted during the November 2024 test at 178,196 miles, showing that the fault has not been rectified despite a year of operation. At 183,939 miles, this 21-year-old Discovery has averaged approximately 8,759 miles per year, which aligns with typical usage for a heavy-duty vehicle of this age. The record shows consistent use, with roughly 8,500 miles covered between November 2023 and November 2024, and another 5,700 miles between November 2024 and December 2025. This steady accumulation suggests the vehicle is not sitting for long periods, but the high mileage places significant stress on the complex suspension components inherent to the Discovery platform. A buyer must prioritize a thorough inspection of the suspension and steering geometry due to recurring failures in ball joints and bushings. The tester flagged play in the offside front lower suspension arm ball joint in 2023 and a nearside rear anti-roll bar ball joint in 2024. Furthermore, the presence of play in steering rack inner joints recorded in 2022 is a significant concern that affects handling precision and should be verified to ensure it has been addressed. The structural integrity of the vehicle requires close attention as corrosion was a noted advisory in both 2022 and 2023. While structural rigidity was not yet compromised, the presence of rust on the inner and outer chassis sections suggests an ongoing process. The braking system also shows signs of reactive maintenance, with pitted brake discs and corroded brake hoses identified in 2023. Any purchaser should check for perished rubber on the hoses and ensure the brake calipers are not binding to prevent future failure.
