2003 Vauxhall Zafira 1.8L Petrol · WV53 AFE

The vehicle demonstrates a highly consistent and stable maintenance profile, evidenced by a continuous string of MOT passes from 2021 through to the most recent test in October 2025. Notably, the records show no defects or advisories over this five-year period, indicating that the vehicle has been maintained to a standard that meets all essential safety and environmental requirements without any documented mechanical decline. This clean history suggests a level of care that has prevented common failure points from appearing on the official record, providing a baseline of confidence in its structural and environmental integrity. The recorded mileage of 124,883 miles is notably low for a 23-year-old vehicle, averaging approximately 5,430 miles per year. While this low usage generally implies less mechanical stress on the engine, transmission, and major drivetrain components, it also suggests the vehicle may have been subject to long periods of inactivity. In automotive terms, low-mileage vehicles that have stood for extended periods can often exhibit different types of wear than high-mileage counterparts, specifically regarding the degradation of materials that rely on regular movement and heat cycles to maintain their properties. Because the MOT history is devoid of advisories, your physical inspection should prioritize age-related deterioration over wear-induced faults. Closely examine the tyres for any signs of perishing or sidewall cracking, as rubber compounds can harden and crack from age and UV exposure even if the tread depth remains high. During the test drive, pay particular attention to the braking system; listen for any unusual noises or feel for brake shudder, which could indicate seized or binding calipers or heavily corroded brake discs resulting from infrequent use. You should also check the suspension for any clunks or knocks over uneven surfaces, as suspension bushes and coil springs can perish or lose their effectiveness over two decades regardless of distance travelled. Finally, verify that time-based maintenance has been performed, as a vehicle with such low annual mileage may have missed critical service intervals if the owner only followed mileage-based schedules. Check the service book for evidence of regular oil changes, coolant flushes, and brake fluid replacements to prevent internal corrosion and fluid breakdown. It is also prudent to inspect various rubber hoses, such as those for the cooling system and brake lines, for signs of cracking or weeping. Given the potential for long periods of standing, ensure the 12V battery is in good health and that the electrical systems function correctly, as batteries are prone to failure when not regularly cycled through charging.
