The MGF uses an interconnected Moulton Hydragas suspension system where fluid and pressurised nitrogen spheres replace conventional steel springs and dampers. Over time, the nitrogen gas chamber gradually permeates through the internal rubber diaphragm and fluid lines can develop leaks. This causes the car to sag, drop its ride height, lean unevenly, and lose damping compliance, producing a harsh, jarring ride that bottoms out over bumps. Dunlop ceased sphere production long ago, so UK owners rely on specialist mobile re-gassing services, refurbished displacer units, or aftermarket coil-spring conversion kits.

The Rover K-Series 16-valve petrol engine is notorious for head gasket failure, compounded in the MGF by its mid-engine layout, small 4.5-litre coolant volume, and long coolant pipe runs. Early engines used plastic dowels that allowed cylinder head shift, while any minor coolant weep quickly causes local overheating, annealing the aluminium head casting and breaching the elastomer gasket seals. Rectification requires skimming the head, upgrading to steel locating dowels, fitting an uprated multi-layer steel (MLS) gasket with an uprated lower oil rail, and bleeding cooling air locks meticulously.

The MGF's mid-mounted engine requires twin metal coolant pipes running under the floorpan to connect the engine bay to the front-mounted radiator. Original factory pipes were fabricated from mild steel and routed directly through the underbody slipstream where they endure constant bombardment from UK road spray, grit, and winter road salt. These pipes rot internally and externally, developing hairline pinholes or sudden seam ruptures that dump engine coolant on the road. Because coolant capacity is low, sudden loss causes instant overheating and head gasket failure before the driver notices.

While the exterior body panels of the MGF hold up decently, its structural underpinnings suffer severely from UK road salt and damp climate exposure. The front and particularly the rear box-section subframes act as moisture traps, rotting from the inside out around mounting blocks, wishbone brackets, and rear suspension turrets. In addition, water draining from the soft top into the hollow sills often blocks factory drain slits, causing structural rust in the inner and outer sills and floorpans around jacking points. Severe corrosion leads to MOT failure and requires expensive fabrication or subframe swaps.

MGF models equipped with Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) commonly develop an issue where the steering wheel actively pulls to one side (typically left) or even turns spontaneously when stationary. The EPAS system relies on a column-mounted optical or resistive torque sensor to gauge driver input. As the sensor ages or suffers mechanical drift from vibration, its calibrated neutral zero-point slips. The EPAS ECU misinterprets this as continuous driver steering effort and commands the electric motor to apply assistance. Rather than replacing the whole column, specialists can physically realign the sensor.
