2006 Subaru Forester 2.5L Petrol · YD06 SHK

The most recent MOT test conducted on 29 November 2025 resulted in a pass with no recorded defects. Evaluating the broader maintenance trend from 2021 onwards, the vehicle demonstrates a remarkably stable and consistent history. Although a minor defect regarding a nearside front anti-roll bar linkage ball joint dust cover was noted in 2020, the subsequent four years of clean passes suggest that this issue was rectified and that the vehicle has not suffered from recurring or escalating mechanical failures. This pattern of clean certificates is a positive indicator of proactive ownership and regular roadworthiness maintenance. The recorded mileage of 168,286 miles over a twenty-year period equates to an average annual usage of approximately 8,414 miles. This is considered moderate and typical for a vehicle of this age, suggesting the car has not been subjected to excessive heavy-duty use, nor has it been left to stand for extended periods, which can often lead to seized components. However, the total mileage is significant, meaning that while the vehicle appears well-maintained, the mechanical components will have experienced substantial wear. Components such as the suspension bushings, coil springs, and various drivetrain seals are likely nearing the end of their expected service life due to cumulative mileage and mechanical stress. During a physical inspection, you should look beyond the MOT record and focus on age-related degradation. Examine the tyres for any signs of perishing or sidewall cracking, which can occur due to the age of the rubber even if the tread depth is adequate. Check the vehicle's underside for any signs of structural corrosion or weeping from the engine and gearbox. On a test drive, pay close attention to the steering and suspension; listen for any clunks or knocks when navigating uneven surfaces, which could indicate worn anti-roll bar links or suspension bushes. Additionally, monitor the braking performance for any shuddering or pulling, which may indicate warped discs or binding calipers. Finally, verify the service history to ensure that time-sensitive maintenance has been performed. Even with moderate mileage, fluids such as brake fluid, coolant, and transmission oil should be replaced based on the calendar to prevent chemical degradation. It is also advisable to check the condition of the 12V battery and ensure that all electrical components and heating systems are fully operational. Given the age of the Subaru, a thorough check of the timing belt and water pump service intervals is essential, as failure to replace these at the correct intervals can lead to catastrophic engine damage.
