DVSA campaign R/2003/170 names Primera cars built between 1 January 1999 and 30 September 2002 - 111,831 UK vehicles in total - for an engine angle and position sensor fault that could cause the engine to stall and, in the worst case, refuse to restart. Because the P12 replaced the P11 in February 2002, the earliest P12 cars sit inside that window, and the fix recorded on the recall register is a quality-assured replacement crankshaft and camshaft sensor. On a twenty-year-old car the campaign is long finished, so the practical issue is a hot stall with no restart and a diagnostic bill, not a free dealer repair.

The RAC's Primera 2002-2007 guide makes an unusual warning for a Nissan: the car was used to trial a great deal of new electronics and, while it has proved admirably robust, expect big bills if the rear view camera or the Birdview DVD navigation system goes wrong - and damaged catalytic converters are similarly costly. Parkers' Primera owner reviews reflect the same ownership experience, with an air conditioning unit failing and being replaced and an ABS system fault traced to physical damage from a pothole. On a car now worth a few hundred pounds, a failed camera, head unit, AC compressor or ABS sensor is the difference between a bargain and a write-off.

The timing chains fitted to the Primera P12 engines (notably the 1.8 petrol QG18DE, 2.0 petrol QR20DE, and 2.2 dCi YD22) are prone to premature elongation and guide wear, especially when subjected to extended oil service intervals. As the chain links wear, the hydraulic tensioner extends to its mechanical limit, allowing slack that disrupts camshaft-to-crankshaft synchronisation. This manifests as metallic cold-start rattling, hesitation under load, rough idling, and engine management warning lights with cam/crank correlation fault codes (P0340/P0335). If left unaddressed, the chain can jump teeth, causing catastrophic valve-to-piston contact on interference engines.
