Buying Tips for the 1989 Austin Mini
- Buy the shell, not the story: inspect floors, inner and outer sills, A-panels, boot floor and battery box, the subframes and their mounting points, and pull back carpets and boot boards — fresh paint deserves more suspicion, not less.
- Identify the suspension before driving: a Hydrolastic 'wet' car (mainly 1964-71 Cooper S, Clubman and 1275GT) should sit level and hold height, while rubber-cone cars give the firm, bouncy original ride and need cone changes every five to ten years.
- Check service evidence for oil changes at roughly 3,000-mile intervals — the gearbox lives in the sump with the engine, and hissing, whining or jumping out of gear point to a worn box that is rebuildable but expensive in labour.
- Confirm originality of any Cooper: clones are common, so check the engine numbers, cam cover, and carburettor setup, and rely on expert inspection and club verification before paying Cooper money.
- Expect oil leaks from the rocker cover, driveshaft and gear selector rods as normal, and treat a dry engine as a warning it is about to fail; budget for a duplex timing chain upgrade if the chain rattles on a 1000.
