Common Problems with the
2002 MG Rover MG TF / MGF

The MG TF launched in February 2002 as a comprehensive evolution of the MGF. The most significant change was the replacement of the interconnected Hydragas suspension with a conventional coil-over-damper setup with a new multi-link rear end. The body received extensive strengthening, and the steering rack was upgraded to a faster 2.8-turn lock-to-lock unit. These changes made the TF a sharper, more modern-driving car.

What changed for 2002

  • Complete suspension redesign with coil-over dampers
  • Multi-link rear suspension replaced Hydragas
  • Faster 2.8-turn steering rack
  • Extensive body strengthening
  • New front and rear styling

Common MOT watch-outs

  • !Under-car coolant pipe corrosion remains critical

All Known Issues

Head Gasket Failure

SeriousEngine

The K-Series engine is prone to head gasket failure. The mid-engine layout and long coolant pipes to the front radiator make the cooling system even more critical.

Est. Repair Cost: £600–£900
Warning Signs:

Overheating, Oil/coolant mixing, Loss of heater heat, Steam from engine bay

What to Inspect:
  • Look for MLS gasket and stainless under-car coolant pipe upgrades
  • Check the expansion tank for oil

Hydragas Suspension Leaks (MGF)

ModerateSuspension & Chassis

The MGF uses a unique interconnected Hydragas suspension system that can leak or lose pressure over time, leading to a harsh ride and low ground clearance.

Est. Repair Cost: £50–£100 (Re-gas) / £400+ (Displacement unit)
Warning Signs:

Car sitting lower than normal, Bumpy, uncomfortable ride, Car leaning to one side

What to Inspect:
  • Measure the ride height on a level surface
  • Check for fluid leaks around the suspension spheres
