1986 Volkswagen 1.9L Petrol · D371 JHY

The Volkswagen passed its most recent MOT on 4 September 2025 at 11,750 miles with no defects recorded, and the maintenance trend appears stable. Prior to that pass, the car failed twice without any defects listed: on 27 August 2025 at 11,633 miles and on 22 July 2024 at 10,559 miles. Both failures with zero recorded faults suggest administrative or presentation issues at the testing station rather than escalating mechanical decay. The recorded mileage shows exceptionally light use for a 1986 vehicle. From the 15 August 2023 test at 9,306 miles, the odometer rose to 10,559 miles by 22 July 2024, then to 11,750 miles by September 2025. That equates to roughly 1,200 miles over two years, or about 294 miles annually across the car's life. Such low accumulation implies long periods of storage, though the sparse MOT history with only five entries leaves limited visibility of care between tests. A buyer should still commission an in-person inspection of structural integrity and corrosion given the vehicle's 40-year age and likely dormant intervals. Standing time promotes rust on chassis members, suspension bushes, and brake calipers even when the MOT shows clean. The repeated no-defect failures mean the DVSA record offers no warning on worn coil springs, binding brakes, or exhaust condition. Check the brake discs for pitting from disuse and verify tyre sidewall condition despite low tread wear. Confirm the tester's clean emissions reading matches actual running, as a seldom-used engine can hide fuel-system faults. The history implies careful but infrequent use rather than neglect, yet physical verification remains essential on a classic of this vintage.
