1988 Mazda 323 1.5L Petrol · E844 GHJ

The most recent MOT test on this 1988 Mazda 323 occurred over three years ago, on 6 July 2022, at a recorded mileage of 90,610. The vehicle failed to pass that day despite two attempts, though no defects were officially recorded—an anomaly that suggests either a technical oversight in the testing process or a vehicle that was borderline compliant at best. The preceding test in 2020 also passed without failings, indicating a stable but unremarkable maintenance history. However, the 2016 failure—despite no recorded issues—raises suspicion, as it coincides with a period where older vehicles often begin to exhibit hidden wear. Without a recent test, there is no assurance that critical components such as suspension bushes, coil springs, or brake calipers remain within safe operational limits. The mileage pattern suggests unusually light usage for a vehicle of this age, with only 4,900 miles accumulated over the past decade (from 85,716 in 2015 to 90,610 in 2022). This could imply prolonged periods of storage or minimal driving, which may have mitigated some wear but also allowed for corrosion and seal degradation. The lack of mileage progression between tests—particularly the stagnation between 2016 and 2020—is notable and warrants scrutiny. Such inactivity can accelerate deterioration in components like fuel systems, suspension linkages, and electrical connections, which may not fail immediately but could pose latent risks. Given the absence of specific defect records, a buyer should prioritise an in-person inspection of high-wear areas prone to silent failure in older vehicles. The suspension should be checked for worn or cracked bushes, sagging coil springs, and binding steering or rear axle components, as these are common failure points in vehicles of this era. Brake discs and calipers should be examined for uneven wear or corrosion, particularly if the vehicle has spent extended periods stationary. Structural integrity is also critical—look for rust penetration in wheel arches, sills, and subframes, as well as any signs of frame distortion. The exhaust system should be inspected for leaks or sagging supports, which are often overlooked but can lead to emissions failures or structural stress. Finally, the electrical system, including battery condition and wiring integrity, should be tested, as prolonged inactivity can compromise connections and components.
