2008 Audi A4 2.0L Diesel · R900 AFF

Recurring issues with suspension component integrity and brake system wear define the mechanical history of this Audi A4, which has consistently flagged similar defects across multiple years of testing. While the vehicle successfully passed its most recent MOT on 4 January 2023, the record remains characterised by a persistent cycle of advisories regarding deteriorating ball joint dust covers, brake disc surface degradation, and oil leaks. This pattern suggests that while the vehicle is maintained to meet minimum safety standards, several underlying mechanical areas have required repeated attention without achieving a permanent resolution, indicating a trend of ongoing component fatigue rather than a comprehensive restoration of the chassis. With an odometer reading of 125,844 miles over its 18-year lifespan, the vehicle averages approximately 6,991 miles per annum, a figure that aligns with typical usage expectations for a car of this vintage. This consistent accumulation of mileage implies that the vehicle has remained in regular operation rather than experiencing prolonged periods of inactivity, which often leads to the seizure of moving parts or the degradation of rubber seals. However, the consistent nature of the advisories suggests that the mechanical stresses of this usage have placed a continuous burden on the suspension and braking systems, necessitating a thorough examination of how these high-mileage components have been serviced over time. Prospective buyers should prioritise a detailed inspection of the front suspension, specifically focusing on the lower ball joint dust covers and track rod ends that have been flagged repeatedly since 2019. During a test drive, listen for any metallic knocking or clunking sounds when navigating uneven road surfaces or speed bumps, as these are primary indicators of play in the suspension linkages. Additionally, the recurring advisories for binding brakes and worn, pitted discs necessitate a careful check of the braking performance; any noticeable judder through the pedal during firm braking or a tendency for the vehicle to pull to one side suggests that the calipers or discs may require immediate replacement. The history of structural corrosion on the subframe, noted in the 2021 test, warrants a physical inspection of the underside to determine the extent of oxidation and whether it has progressed beyond surface-level scaling. Furthermore, the oil leak flagged in the most recent inspection should be investigated to identify the source, as persistent leaks can contaminate surrounding rubber bushings and hoses, leading to premature failure. Verify the condition of the tyres for uneven wear patterns, as the history of inner-edge wear suggests that the vehicle may have underlying wheel alignment issues that could lead to accelerated tyre degradation if not corrected.
