1998 Nissan Micra 1.0L Petrol · S138 EJW

This 1998 Nissan Micra’s most recent MOT test, conducted on 2022-09-01, resulted in a failure—though no specific defects were recorded, which is unusual and suggests either an administrative error or a test where only minor issues were overlooked. The preceding test, on 2021-08-27, passed without failings, indicating a stable but inconsistent roadworthiness pattern. The gap between tests—just over a year—is standard, but the failure raises immediate questions about whether critical components were overlooked or if the vehicle was driven unsafely between tests. Without defect details, the true condition of brakes, suspension, or emissions systems remains uncertain. The recorded mileage of 53,327 miles over approximately 28 years equates to roughly 1,905 miles annually, which is unusually low for a vehicle of this age. This suggests either prolonged periods of inactivity or very light use, potentially mitigating some wear on high-mileage components like suspension bushes or drivetrain seals. However, low mileage can also imply deferred maintenance, as owners may delay servicing when a car isn’t driven frequently. The sparse MOT history—only two tests in five years—further complicates assessment, as it provides no insight into intermediate wear or recurring issues that might have been addressed or neglected. Given the lack of defect specifics in the 2022 failure, a buyer should prioritise a thorough inspection of the braking system, particularly rear calipers and discs, as binding brakes are a common failure point in older Micras. The suspension—including coil springs, bushes, and shock absorbers—should be examined for uneven wear or corrosion, especially around wheel arches where rust can compromise structural integrity. Emissions systems, if equipped with a catalytic converter, may also warrant scrutiny, as older vehicles often develop leaks or efficiency issues over time. Corrosion checks beneath the vehicle, particularly around the sills and subframe, are essential given the car’s age, as hidden rust can weaken load-bearing components. Finally, the electrical system and interior components, such as seatbelts and airbag status, should be verified, as these are often overlooked in low-mileage vehicles.
