2007 Chrysler Sebring 2.0L Diesel · SJ07 AAX

The Chrysler Sebring’s MOT history over the past five years reveals a concerning pattern of repeated failures without any recorded defects, culminating in the most recent test on 10 November 2021 at 109,580 miles—a failure with no advisories or faults logged. This lack of documented issues suggests either an unusually clean vehicle mechanically, or more likely, a scenario where the tester failed to identify critical problems. The absence of advisories or defects in consecutive passes and fails raises questions about the thoroughness of previous inspections, particularly given the vehicle’s age and mileage. Without any advisories on wear items like tyres, brakes, or suspension, a buyer cannot rely on the MOT record alone to gauge maintenance neglect or deferred repairs. The Sebring’s mileage accumulation has been exceptionally low for its age, averaging just 5,767 miles per year over the past five years—a figure far below the UK average for a vehicle of this vintage. The gap between the 2020 and 2021 tests (1,192 miles in nearly a year) and the identical mileage at two separate 2019 failures (101,771 miles) imply either infrequent use or prolonged periods of inactivity. Such low mileage could mask underlying issues, as components like suspension bushes, brake fluid, and rubber seals may degrade even with minimal driving if the vehicle remains stationary for extended periods. The lack of mileage progression also suggests the car may not have been subject to regular short trips, which can accelerate wear on emissions systems and battery health. Given the absence of any recorded faults or advisories, a buyer should prioritise a pre-purchase inspection focusing on areas not covered by the MOT, particularly those prone to silent degradation in low-mileage vehicles. Key checks should include the condition of suspension components—such as coil springs, anti-roll bars, and bushings—since these can weaken without significant mileage. Brake system integrity, including caliper binding, disc warping, and fluid condition, should be verified, as hydraulic systems can fail even with minimal use. Structural corrosion, especially around wheel arches, sills, and exhaust mounts, should be examined closely, as rust can compromise safety without affecting MOT passability. The emissions system, including the catalytic converter and oxygen sensors, may also require attention, given the vehicle’s age and the potential for degraded performance due to inactivity. Without a clear maintenance history or advisories, this Sebring presents an unusual case where due diligence beyond the MOT is essential.
