Known faults for Peugeot Peugeot 306
Our database tracks 3 specific mechanical faults and recurring failure patterns identified across UK MOT testing stations for this generation.
MOT Roadworthiness: Poor
This rating reflects historical MOT pass rates and recurring advisory wear patterns from official DVSA test logs. Note that roadworthiness does not verify outstanding finance, insurance write-offs, or stolen records.
Verify lender finance agreements, insurance write-offs, police stolen registers, and mileage rollback.
Common Problems: PEUGEOT 306
Known issues reported by owners and MOT testers.
- Rear Torsion Beam Radius Arm Bearing Failure(Serious)
Like other classic Peugeots of this era, the 306 rear suspension relies on a transverse torsion beam with trailing arms riding on internal needle roller bearings. Over UK winters, moisture and road salt breach the outer rubber seals, causing the ungreased needle bearings to disintegrate and machine grooves into the axle tube journals. As the bearings collapse, the rear wheels tilt sharply inward at the top (heavy negative camber). Left unaddressed, the inner tyre sidewall cuts into the metal wheel tub.
- Heater Matrix Coolant Leak into Footwell(Moderate)
The heater matrix core tucked behind the centre dashboard console is prone to corrosion and plastic tank seam failure. As the core leaks, hot engine coolant drips directly onto the front passenger carpet and air ducting. In addition to losing engine coolant, the escaping ethylene glycol causes an oily, greasy film on the windscreen that cannot be cleared by wipers or demister fans. Replacing the matrix requires comprehensive dashboard removal, making labour costs high.
