1961 Austin MINI Cooper 1.3L Petrol · 654 MTV

A remarkably clean MOT record underlines the Mini’s enduring mechanical integrity; the most recent test on 19 August 2023 passed without any recorded defects, and no advisories have appeared in the documented history, suggesting that the fundamental systems have remained within acceptable limits for a vehicle of this vintage. At 4 605 miles the annualised mileage works out to roughly 71 miles per year, an exceptionally low figure for a 1961 model. Such sparse use typically indicates long periods of inactivity, which can be benign but may also allow moisture to settle in hidden cavities and promote surface rust if the car has been stored outdoors. The lack of intermediate MOT entries means there are no mileage spikes to suggest a sudden change in usage, reinforcing the picture of a vehicle that has been driven only occasionally. Even with a spotless MOT, age‑related wear should be inspected thoroughly. Examine the chassis and sub‑frame for any signs of corrosion, especially around the rear suspension mounting points and the front cross‑member, where rust can compromise structural rigidity. On a low‑speed drive listen for any metallic clunk or knock when traversing bumps, which may reveal deteriorated suspension bushes, worn coil‑spring mounts, or loosened ball joints. Check the steering for excessive play or a vague vibration that could indicate worn rack bushings or a misaligned steering box. The braking system, while passing the test, should be felt for pedal feel; a spongy or pulsating pedal may betray thinning pads, warped discs, or developing brake‑pipe leaks that were not yet severe enough to fail the MOT. Given the car’s age, the engine and drivetrain merit close attention. Verify that the engine idles smoothly without excessive roughness, and that acceleration is linear without sudden loss of power, which could point to worn valve guides, a stretched timing chain, or a compromised oil pump. The clutch should engage cleanly without a judder or chatter, and the gear‑change should be crisp; any grinding or difficulty could signal worn synchronisers or a deteriorating clutch disc. Finally, inspect the cooling system for any coolant leaks around the radiator, water pump, and hose connections, and confirm that the temperature gauge remains stable during a short drive, as overheating issues often emerge only after prolonged operation. A comprehensive pre‑purchase inspection covering these areas will confirm whether the Mini’s immaculate MOT record truly reflects a mechanically sound vehicle.
