2002 BMW K Series 1.2L Petrol · AE52 MVT

A faultless DVSA record defines this 2002 BMW K Series, with three consecutive pass tests dated 2022-05-03, 2023-05-09, and 2024-06-10 each returning zero advisories and zero failures. That clean sheet is particularly meaningful for a motorcycle of this vintage, where corrosion around brake callipers, exhaust hangers, fork seals, and electrical ancillaries typically produces at least minor advisories as the years progress. The mechanical takeaway here is consistent structural integrity and component condition across the recent test window, with no recorded trend of worsening defects or recurring issues across the same component groups. Recorded mileage of 38,752 miles on a 24-year-old machine equates to roughly 1,615 miles per year, which is notably low for a motorcycle of this generation and points to either genuine light use or extended periods of storage between rides. While the three MOT certificates sit at tidy twelve-month intervals with no suspicious gaps in testing, a motorcycle covering only around 1,600 miles annually will spend a disproportionate amount of time cold-starting and short-running, which mechanically translates to accelerated moisture accumulation inside the engine and gearbox, a higher likelihood of perished rubber components such as fork seals, dust covers, and brake hoses becoming brittle without regular flexing, and potential flat spots in tyres that have stood loaded in one position. The annual mileage trend across the test window is impossible to verify because each certificate returned no recorded odometer reading, but the low annualised figure itself should prompt close inspection for tell-tale signs of long-term standing rather than active touring use. For a buyer, the absence of any flagged items in the MOT history means there are no specific advisories to chase down, so the inspection priorities shift to those components that deteriorate quietly with age and under-use on a low-mileage machine of this vintage. On a test ride, pay close attention to the front fork action: any juddering through the handlebars under braking, irregular damping that produces a wallowing sensation, or visible fluid tracking down the stanchions would indicate that the fork oil and seals have degraded during periods of standing and require immediate attention. Similarly, evaluate the brake feel carefully; a soft or unresponsive lever, or excessive lever travel before bite, would suggest that the master cylinder seals or the brake hoses themselves have perished internally from lack of use, even though no such defect has yet been recorded. Equally important on a test ride is the engine behaviour itself, which the clean MOT sheet does not address. Listen for any mechanical rattles or irregular ticking on cold start, monitor how quickly the engine reaches and holds a stable idle, and check for any hesitation or misfire under steady throttle that might point to dried-out fuel system internals, a tired battery unable to hold charge between short rides, or perished intake rubbers. Inspect the tyres closely for cracking of the sidewalls, flat spotting, or uneven wear, as a motorcycle that has covered only modest mileage will often be running aged compound rubber that compromises grip despite apparent tread depth. Finally, examine the underside and the swinging arm pivot area for any surface corrosion that would be consistent with winter road salt exposure and short commutes, and confirm that the chain and sprockets show even wear rather than rust pitting, since a chain that has stiffened from infrequent lubrication can damage the sprocket teeth rapidly once regular use resumes.
