Auto Express's Touareg Mk3 used guide calls this the most common gripe among owners: hesitation when pulling away, for example at a junction or into a roundabout, and it states that VW issued software updates that do not seem to be totally effective. Carwow's 2026 review independently reports the eight-speed gearbox feels hesitant around town, which is exactly where a heavy, air-suspended SUV needs it to be smooth. On a used car this is the difference between a pleasant flagship and a lurching one, and it cannot be fixed cheaply.

Auto Express counts four Touareg Mk3 recalls: November 2018 covering 110 cars built August-October 2018 with faulty rear seatbelt buckles; February 2019 for poorly made shock absorbers affecting 10 cars built December 2018; March 2020 for 22 cars built April 2018-January 2019 with loose bolts in the steering mechanism; and May 2020 for 255 cars built September-November 2019 that could leak gearbox oil. RAC's CR used guide lists the same seatbelt, steering-connection, gearbox oil join and damper actions and tells buyers to check each campaign has been carried out, so an incomplete history is a genuine safety and value issue.

The AA's mechanic review of the Touareg names air suspension leaks, compressor faults and uneven ride height as a leading issue as these cars age, alongside drivetrain wear where servicing has been skipped, and warns that tyres, brakes and insurance cost more than buyers expect. RAC's CR guide tells buyers to check the large alloys for extensive scratch damage because that can indicate misaligned suspension showing up as uneven tyre wear, and prices front brake discs at £75-£152 in parts alone on a 2018 3.0 V6 TDI. Neither source describes the system as fragile, but both make the same point: on this car, wear items are premium.
