2008 Vauxhall Astra 1.6L Petrol · AF58 AVJ

A chronic pattern of brake and under-bonnet wear advisories, alongside one dangerous tyre failure, defines the mechanical story of this 18 year old Vauxhall Astra. Across the seven recorded tests from 2017 to 2022, brake disc wear has been flagged on virtually every occasion where any defect was noted, affecting both the front and rear axles and progressing from a single advisory in 2017 to all four discs being pitted or scored by 2021. The most recent test on 2 November 2022 initially resulted in a fail due to a severely deteriorated offside front outer constant velocity boot, which was downgraded to a minor on the same day as the vehicle was re-presented and passed. That same 2022 visit also captured an oil leak, a minor exhaust gas leak, an offside front tyre worn on edge close to the legal limit, and a further front brake disc advisory. The 2018 test carries the most serious finding: a dangerous nearside front tyre recorded below the 1.6 mm tread requirement. Taken together, the record shows consistent friction-surface deterioration, recurring gaiter and sealing issues, and a tyre that was once run beyond the point of legal safety. Recorded mileage of 132,427 miles across roughly 18 years equates to approximately 7,357 miles per year, which sits broadly in line with typical annual accumulation for a vehicle of this age. There are no extended multi-year gaps in the MOT history, with tests recorded in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, indicating the car has remained in regular use rather than laid up for prolonged periods. The relatively steady test-to-folder intervals are consistent with a working or commuter vehicle accumulating wear proportionally over its life. Mechanically, this continuous usage profile tends to mean steady rather than intermittent strain on suspension, braking and drivetrain components, and it aligns with the recurring advisories on friction surfaces and rubber gaiters seen throughout the record. Given the documented brake disc wear across both axles, a prospective buyer should carry out a thorough rolling road or road test focusing on pedal feel and stopping stability. Pulsation through the brake pedal under firm pressure would indicate the pitted front discs recorded in 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022 have reached the threshold for replacement, while any rear imbalance or low-effort handbrake performance would tie into the 2021 advisory that the parking brake was only just meeting efficiency. Listen for any binding or dragging from the rear, as a brake lever that failed to release correctly was recorded in 2021, and inspect both rear calliper sliders and handbrake mechanism for free movement. On the test drive, also feel for any low-frequency clonks over bumps or vibration through the steering, which could indicate worn suspension bushes or coil springs typical of an Astra at this mileage, even though no suspension components were specifically flagged. The oil leak noted as not excessive in 2022 warrants a close inspection of the engine bay and undertray for fresh seepage around the sump, cam cover and front crankshaft seal, and a check of the coolant and oil levels for any signs of recent top-up that might mask a worsening seep. The deteriorated offside front CV boot recorded as a minor in 2022 should be examined for fresh grease loss around the joint and any clicking or rhythmic knock on full lock, which would confirm the gaiter has split further since the test. The minor exhaust leak should be checked at the manifold gasket, front flexi section and rear silencer joints for ticking on a cold start or visible soot traces. Finally, verify all four tyre tread depths with a gauge, given the dangerous tyre finding in 2018 and the close-to-limit offside front tyre in 2022, and confirm the wheels are free of kerbing damage that would indicate the kind of edge wear previously recorded.
