2016 Volkswagen Touran 1.6L Diesel · AV66 FDP

The most recent MOT inspection on 13 May 2026 resulted in a pass, but the vehicle's maintenance trend shows a concerning pattern of recurring advisories regarding tyre condition. While the vehicle has successfully passed its inspections since 2020, the frequency and nature of the advisories have shifted from nil defects to consistent warnings about tyre degradation. This suggests a trend of reactive rather than proactive maintenance, where components are being monitored as they approach failure rather than being replaced during scheduled servicing. The single failure in May 2025 regarding headlamp aim was a minor adjustment issue, but the persistent focus on tyre integrity indicates that the vehicle's consumables are not being managed with high regularity. With a recorded mileage of 54,216 over approximately ten years, this Volkswagen Touran has averaged roughly 5,422 miles per year. This is significantly lower than the UK national average, classifying it as a low-usage vehicle. While low mileage generally implies less mechanical wear on the engine, gearbox, and drivetrain, it presents specific risks associated with infrequent use. Vehicles that spend long periods stationary are prone to accelerated rubber degradation, fluid acidification, and component seizure. The low annual mileage explains the recurring tyre advisories, as rubber compounds perish and crack due to age and ozone exposure even when tread depth remains legally sufficient. A primary concern for a prospective buyer is the chronic issue with tyre perishing and cracking, which has appeared in various forms since at least 2023. The most recent advisories for the nearside rear and offside front tyres indicate that the rubber is losing its structural elasticity. On a test drive, you should listen for rhythmic thumping or uneven road noise, which can indicate internal tyre structure failure, and inspect the sidewalls closely for deep fissures. Furthermore, the 2023 advisory regarding pitted and scored brake discs suggests that the braking system may suffer from surface corrosion due to infrequent use. During your inspection, check for any shuddering through the brake pedal when slowing from higher speeds, which would indicate warped or heavily corroded discs, and ensure the calipers are not binding, which can happen when a vehicle sits idle for extended periods. Given the low-mileage profile, you must conduct a thorough physical inspection beyond the recorded mileage. Check the battery health using a multimeter if possible, as low-use vehicles often suffer from insufficient charge cycles, leading to premature battery failure. Inspect all rubber components, including suspension bushes and coolant hoses, for signs of cracking or hardening. It is also vital to verify the service history to ensure that time-based maintenance, such as oil changes and brake fluid flushes, has been performed according to the calendar rather than just mileage intervals. Ensure the service book contains stamps that align with the low mileage, as neglecting fluid changes in a vehicle that sits idle can lead to internal engine sludge and moisture contamination.
