2007 Vauxhall Zafira 1.6L Petrol · BL07 MTY

A Zafira of this vintage carrying a fairly modest annual mileage for its nineteen years on the road has produced an MOT record that is conspicuously devoid of the usual wear-and-tear advisories one would expect, and yet the most recent test on 26 March 2025 returned a failure with no defects listed against it. This is a notable anomaly: the vehicle was previously presented and passed at Swansea on 24 September 2022 after a failure on the very same date, and before that it secured a clean pass in October 2021. The absence of recorded defect details on both the 2022 failure and the 2025 failure prevents any meaningful component-level trend analysis, but the pattern itself suggests the car may have been withdrawn from testing or driven very little between visits. A buyer should treat the undocumented failure with caution and request the VT20 refusal certificate or the test station's annotated printout, as the cause could range from a trivial emissions lambda sensor reading to a more substantive structural or braking concern that the DVSA database has not captured. With only four test entries spread across the vehicle's life and a recorded odometer reading of 113,477 miles, the usage profile is unusually sparse, averaging around 5,972 miles annually, but the long intervals between tests and the lack of mileage progression data on multiple entries makes it impossible to confirm consistent running. The jump from whatever mileage was recorded in October 2021 to the current figure suggests the car may have accumulated most of its mileage in relatively short bursts, which on a Zafira of this age tends to accelerate ageing of the timing chain tensioner, the dual-mass flywheel, and the rear brake shoes through infrequent but heavy use. Equally, the possibility of extended standing periods cannot be ruled out, which on a 2007 Zafira typically presents as perished coolant hoses, seized rear caliper slide pins, and a tired EGR valve prone to carbon build-up. Given the undisclosed nature of the 2025 failure, any prospective test drive should focus initially on the items most likely to have caused a refusal. Start the engine from cold and listen for a rattle from the timing chain area that settles after a second or two, which is characteristic of a worn primary tensioner on the A18XER or Z18XER units fitted to this generation. Check for any smell of coolant from under the bonnet, as the plastic thermostat housing and the heater matrix are known weak points and can produce a failed emissions reading if the coolant level has dropped. On the move, expect to feel any pulling from the front brakes, as the Zafira is prone to binding front calipers that can generate a sharp judder under light pedal pressure, and listen for clonks over speed bumps which would indicate tired front lower wishbone bushes or anti-roll bar drop links, both of which are common MOT advisory items on cars of this mileage. A thorough physical inspection should also be carried out with the vehicle raised, paying particular attention to the rear axle area where the brake pipe corrosion advisories frequently appear on Zafiras of this vintage, especially around the fuel tank strap area and the underbody longitudinals. Examine the exhaust downpipe and flexi joint for soot staining indicating a leaking lambda sensor or a tired catalyst, which could easily account for an MOT emissions failure. Inspect the rear suspension coil springs for signs of corrosion or snapping, and check the tailgate struts for any loss of pressure, as these are regular advisory items. Finally, because the 2025 failure is unrecorded, it is prudent to ring the test station that issued the refusal to obtain the specific defect details, and to budget for a fresh MOT at the buyer's chosen garage so that the present mechanical condition is independently verified before committing to the purchase.
