2012 Renault Clio 1.6L Petrol · BV12 SYY

This 2012 Renault Clio presents a mixed mechanical record, punctuated by significant failures and recurring advisories, despite passing its most recent MOT test on 2026-10-07 after an immediate repair for dangerous stop lamps. The vehicle previously failed its 2022 MOT with major defects including a rear exhaust leak, untested emissions, and a non-functioning position lamp, alongside advisories for front tyres worn close to the legal limit and front brake discs that were already noted as worn in the preceding year. While the vehicle has achieved clean passes in 2023 and 2025, the pattern of substantial failures and persistent advisories, particularly concerning braking components and tyres, indicates a history requiring attention to these areas. The vehicle's recorded mileage of 74,945 miles over approximately fourteen years equates to an average annual usage of around 5,353 miles, which is low for its age. While lower mileage typically suggests less overall wear on major drivetrain components, it can also contribute to age-related degradation of rubber components, brake corrosion from infrequent use, and perishing of tyres, all of which are reflected in the vehicle's MOT history. The advisories for worn, pitted, or scored brake discs and a perishing rear tyre align with characteristics often seen in vehicles with lower annual mileage. Given the history, a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is strongly advised, with particular attention to the braking system. The front and rear brake discs have received multiple advisories for wear, pitting, and scoring since 2021; during a test drive, listen for any grinding noises, feel for pedal judder, or observe any reduced braking efficiency. The nearside front suspension arm pin or bush was noted as worn in 2021, so listen for any knocking or clunking sounds when driving over uneven surfaces and assess for any excessive play in the steering. All tyres should be closely inspected for signs of perishing or cracking, especially the rear, and their tread depths verified. Furthermore, the significant exhaust leak recorded in 2022 warrants careful examination of the entire exhaust system for any ongoing leaks or corrosion, listening for unusual noises under acceleration. Finally, verify the correct operation of all exterior lighting, including the stop lamps and position lamps, given their recent failure points.
