Steering and suspension components represent the primary mechanical concern for this vehicle, following a period of recorded wear in the steering rack and lower suspension linkages. While the most recent MOT passed on 19 July 2023 without defects, the history shows a notable cluster of issues in 2021 involving a major failure of the nearside front lower suspension arm ball joint and a major failure regarding an inoperative engine MIL. The record also highlighted play in both the nearside and offside front steering rack inner joints, which remained as advisories into the following year. Although the 2022 and 2023 tests show no recorded defects, the previous instability in the steering and suspension geometry suggests these specific areas require close inspection. The vehicle has covered 71,756 miles over its 21-year lifespan, which equates to an average annual accumulation of approximately 3,417 miles. This is a low mileage profile for a vehicle of this age. Mechanically, such low usage can imply less wear on high-friction components like brake discs and engine internals, but it can also mean components like suspension bushes, rubber seals, and steering joints are subject to more frequent degradation from age and lack of movement rather than high-frequency mechanical stress. The spacing of the tests shows a consistent annual pattern, though the low mileage means the vehicle may have spent significant periods stationary. A prospective buyer should pay particular attention to the steering and front-end suspension during a test drive. Given the previous advisories for play in the steering rack inner joints and a worn ball joint, listen for any knocking, clunking, or popping noises when navigating uneven road surfaces or turning the steering wheel at low speeds. Any sensation of vagueness in the steering or a tendency for the car to pull to one side could indicate that the previously noted steering rack issues have recurred or were not fully rectified. Additionally, the 2021 MOT record included an advisory for a gearbox oil leak that was not considered excessive at the time. It is necessary to inspect the area around the transmission housing and under the vehicle for any signs of fresh or weeping oil. While the 2023 test was clean, any evidence of fresh fluid leaks would indicate the condition has progressed. Monitoring for any changes in gear engagement smoothness or unusual smells during operation is also advised to ensure the gearbox integrity remains stable.
