2004 Volkswagen Beetle 1.6L Petrol · CW54 CXR

The Volkswagen Beetle currently holds a failed MOT status from the 8 January 2026 test at 153,687 miles, with no defects logged by the tester. Prior to this, the vehicle passed three consecutive annual tests between January 2023 and January 2025, showing a previously stable maintenance trend that has now broken down. The most recent failure leaves the car unroadworthy until the presenting fault is identified and rectified, despite the absence of recorded advisories in earlier years. Annual mileage averages around 6,986 miles, consistent with typical use for a 22-year-old vehicle. The records show steady accumulation: 137,621 miles in January 2023, 143,359 miles in January 2024, 148,252 miles in January 2025, and 153,687 miles by January 2026. A notable event occurred in January 2024 when the car failed on 15 January at 143,353 miles then passed three days later at 143,359 miles, indicating a rapid pre-sale fix with minimal running. The DVSA data itself is sparse, listing no defects or advisories across any pass or fail entry. Given the unexplained January 2026 failure with no defects captured, a buyer must commission a full mechanical inspection before purchase. The tester logged nothing on corrosion, suspension bushes, brake discs, or exhaust emissions, yet a blank defect sheet on a failure suggests the issue may be administrative or a fault the tester did not codify. The January 2024 fail-pass sequence within 143,353 to 143,359 miles implies previous owners addressed only what was needed to secure the certificate. In person, verify structural integrity underneath for rust, check coil springs and binding calipers for age-related fatigue, and confirm the tyres and wiper blades meet legal limits. The clean advisory history offers no warning of consumable wear, so assume suspension and brake components at 153,687 miles are due scrutiny regardless of the absent MOT notes.
