2020 Volkswagen Crafter 2.0L Diesel · DP69 DWM

The most recent MOT inspection on 16 December 2025 resulted in a pass, although it introduced a new advisory regarding slight wear or play in the steering column universal joint. Looking at the historical trend, the vehicle maintained a clean record through 2023 and 2024, but the appearance of advisories in consecutive years suggests a transition from a pristine state to a phase of standard component degradation. While the vehicle remains roadworthy, the trend indicates that wear-and-tear items are beginning to require attention, moving from tyre degradation in early 2024 to steering component play in late 2025. With 94,499 miles recorded over approximately six years, this Volkswagen Crafter has covered an average of roughly 15,750 miles per annum. This represents a high level of usage for a commercial vehicle of this age, indicating it has likely been used regularly for transit or delivery duties rather than sitting idle. While consistent use often implies a more predictable maintenance schedule, the high mileage necessitates a rigorous inspection of heavy-duty components. Prospective buyers should be aware that increased mileage accelerates the wear on suspension bushes, shock absorbers, brake discs, and the drivetrain, all of which may be approaching the end of their service life. During a test drive, particular attention must be paid to the steering response to address the advisory regarding the steering column universal joint. Listen for any audible clunking, knocking, or clicking sensations through the steering wheel, especially when maneuvering at low speeds or turning the wheel sharply. Any sensation of vagueness or a lack of precision in the steering direction could indicate that the play in the joint is progressing toward a failure point. Additionally, inspect the rear tyres thoroughly for sidewall cracking or perishing, as noted in the 2024 records. Even if the tread depth appears sufficient, age-related rubber degradation can compromise structural integrity and grip, particularly in wet conditions. Given the high mileage and commercial nature of the vehicle, a thorough check of the underside is essential. Inspect the suspension system for worn coil springs or leaking dampers, and check the brake system for signs of binding calipers or excessive disc corrosion. It is also prudent to verify the service history to ensure that oil changes and fluid replacements, such as coolant and brake fluid, have been conducted according to the manufacturer's intervals rather than just the MOT schedule. Ensuring the vehicle has a documented history of regular maintenance will be critical to mitigating the risks associated with its high-use profile.
