2012 Audi A5 S Line TDI 2.0L Heavy oil · DU12 ENR

A serious rear‑end failure pattern emerged in early 2021, when the MOT recorded a dangerously thin rear brake pad, a rear tyre below the legal tread depth, a non‑functioning central rear stop lamp and a fluid‑leaking rear shock absorber. Those items were evidently remedied, because the car passed the very next test and has logged clean results in every subsequent MOT, including the most recent inspection on 12 February 2026, indicating that the major rear‑system deficiencies have not recurred. At 129,341 mi the car averages roughly 9,200 mi per year, which sits squarely within normal usage for a fourteen‑year‑old Audi A5. The MOT history shows annual testing with no prolonged gaps, suggesting the odometer reading is credible and that the vehicle has not experienced any unusually high mileage spikes that would accelerate wear beyond what the recorded mileage implies. When you inspect the car, give particular attention to the rear braking system: feel for any pedal pulsation, listen for squeal or grinding, and verify even pad wear by checking the pad thickness visually if possible. Confirm that the rear tyre tread is uniformly above the legal minimum and that there are no side‑wall cracks or bulges. Test the rear stop lamp for proper illumination and ensure the rear lights operate without flicker. Examine the rear shock absorbers for any signs of oil residue on the suspension components or under the vehicle, and listen for clunking or excessive bounce when driving over bumps, which could indicate a recurring leak or worn bushings. A short road‑test should also include a thorough check of steering feel and any pull to one side, as rear‑suspension issues can manifest as handling quirks. Verify that the brakes respond firmly without excessive travel, and that the vehicle comes to a straight stop without pulling. Confirm that all exterior lights, especially the central rear stop lamp, function correctly. Address any lingering concerns promptly, as the earlier rear‑system failures were the most significant safety items recorded in the MOT history.
