The MOT history reinforces this, with extended gaps between examinations such as the interval from early 2020 to early 2021 and again from 2023 to 2025, indicating that the vehicle has spent significant time inactive. Such low usage carries its own mechanical consequences: standing accelerates brake disc corrosion, caliper seizure due to corrosion of the sliding pins, degradation of the 12V battery through repeated partial discharge cycles, drying and cracking of rubber components such as drive belts, coolant hoses and suspension bushes, and perishing of tyre sidewalls from age rather than wear. Furthermore, the engine oil leaks recorded progressively over the years are particularly telling in a low-mileage vehicle, as short journeys and infrequent running prevent the engine from reaching sufficient operating temperature to evaporate moisture from the oil and keep seals supple. A prospective buyer should treat the recurring engine oil leak as a priority inspection item, verifying the source whether it stems from the sump, valve cover gasket, camshaft seals or rear main seal and obtaining a clear indication of fluid loss rate, as progression from a non-excessive advisory to a dangerous failure in just three years indicates an accelerating problem. On a test drive, listen for any engine knocking at idle that might suggest diluted oil, watch the temperature gauge for sluggish warm-up indicative of a failing thermostat, and inspect the underside and engine bay for fresh seepage. The brake system warrants close attention as well; both front discs have been flagged as worn and pitted since 2021, an offside front caliper has previously bound, and a rear brake pipe was flagged for corrosion across the axle. During a road test, expect to feel any brake shudder through the pedal under firm pressure, listen for grinding or scraping indicative of worn pads contacting corroded discs, and confirm that the vehicle pulls straight under braking without any drag from a seized caliper. The offside rear lamp failure is a minor electrical repair but should prompt a general check of all exterior lighting, including wiring and earth points that can deteriorate with age. Beyond the recorded defects, several age and usage related checks are essential. Inspect all tyres carefully for sidewall cracking and perishing, including the spare, as tyres over six years old can be unsafe regardless of tread depth, and verify the manufacturing date on each sidewall. Open the bonnet and look for perished coolant and vacuum hoses, a weakening drive belt, signs of corrosion around the battery tray, and a battery that holds charge under load, as standing vehicles frequently suffer from premature battery failure. Finally, confirm recent replacement of the timing belt, coolant, brake fluid and differential and transfer box oils if applicable, and review the service book stamps to verify that calendar-based servicing has been carried out, because low annual mileage does not obviate the need for time-based fluid and component replacement on a vehicle of this age.
