2008 Renault Clio 1.1L Petrol · FE58 HWN

A recurring theme of corrosion on the rear brake pipe assemblies and progressive wear on the front suspension geometry dominates the mechanical narrative of this 2008 Renault Clio. The most recent MOT on 17 October 2025 recorded the vehicle as passed, yet it still listed corroded rear brake pipes on both sides and a parking‑brake reserve‑travel excess, while a failure the day before had highlighted the same brake‑pipe condition together with a faulty dipswitch and seat‑belt buckle. Over the past three years the record shows a steady accumulation of major failures on front suspension ball joints, track‑rod ends and an off‑side headlamp, interspersed with advisory tyre condition notes, indicating that wear and corrosion issues have been persistent rather than isolated incidents. At 106 856 mi the car averages just under 6 000 mi per annum, a mileage figure that is low for an eighteen‑year‑old vehicle and suggests periods of light use or prolonged storage. Such reduced utilisation can mitigate cumulative wear on engine and drivetrain components, but it also creates an environment conducive to moisture‑induced corrosion, as evidenced by the repeated rear brake‑pipe advisories. The consistent annual MOT entries show no significant gaps, implying the vehicle has been kept on the road and subjected to regular testing, which gives a reliable picture of its condition despite the modest mileage. Prospective buyers should give particular attention to the rear brake pipe assemblies; visual inspection for rust, pitting or fluid seepage is essential, and a road test should include a firm, pedal‑free brake feel without sponginess or pulling to either side. The front suspension warrants a thorough check of the lower arm ball joints, track‑rod ends and anti‑roll bar joints that have been recorded as excessively worn – listen for clunks over bumps, feel for any steering play, and verify that tyre wear is even. The advisory oil leak noted in 2024 should be traced to its source; even a non‑excessive leak can lead to low oil levels or contamination of surrounding components, so a mechanic should confirm the seal integrity and monitor oil quantity. Tyre condition is another concern: multiple tyres have been flagged as slightly damaged or close to the legal tread limit, so a fresh set may be required to meet safety standards. Finally, the interior safety items flagged in earlier failures – the off‑side rear seat‑belt buckle and the main‑beam dipswitch – should be tested for proper operation, and the central parking‑brake travel should be measured to ensure it is within specification. The off‑side headlamp failure recorded in 2024 also indicates that the lighting system should be inspected for correct operation of both mains and indicators. A comprehensive pre‑purchase inspection that addresses these specific points will provide a clear indication of any imminent remedial work and help the buyer gauge the true roadworthiness of the vehicle.
