2005 Vauxhall Astravan 1.7L Diesel · GF05 RTX

A pattern of recurring corrosion on brake pipes and discs, alongside persistent oil leaks from the engine and gearbox, defines the long-term record of this vehicle. While these issues were flagged consistently between 2018 and 2022, the trend has shifted toward a cleaner roadworthiness profile, with the most recent test on 14 June 2024 and the preceding 2023 test both returning passes with no defects recorded. The recorded mileage of 67,201 miles is low for a vehicle of this age, averaging approximately 3,200 miles per year. This low annual accumulation often correlates with the corrosion patterns seen in the earlier MOT history, specifically the pitting of brake discs and the deterioration of brake pipes, which typically occur when a vehicle spends significant time stationary. Attention should be paid to the braking system and chassis, given the historical reports of corroded brake pipes and pitted discs. During a test drive, feel for any unusual pedal judder or a spongy response that could indicate the state of the brake lines and discs. Inspect the underbody for any evidence of previous repairs or remaining corrosion on the offside rear brake pipe and the rear shock absorbers. The recurring advisories regarding oil leaks from the engine and gearbox, as well as seepage from the steering rack, necessitate a thorough visual inspection of the engine bay and the ground beneath the vehicle. Listen for any knocks or clunks over uneven surfaces, which would relate to the previously flagged deterioration of the front anti-roll bar linkage. Check for any fluid residue around the steering rack boots to ensure the reported seepage has been addressed.
