1991 Volkswagen Passat 1.8L Petrol · J427 CTU

This Volkswagen Passat has a single MOT record from October 2022 at 204,672 miles, with no defects or advisories noted. The absence of any prior tests means there is no historical context to assess trends in roadworthiness, structural integrity, or recurring mechanical issues. The most recent test suggests the vehicle passed all mandatory checks at the time, but the lack of subsequent testing—nearly four years later—raises immediate concerns about maintenance consistency. A vehicle of this age and mileage should have undergone at least one MOT in the intervening period unless it was temporarily exempt (e.g., off-road or non-road-use status), which would need verification. The recorded mileage of 204,672 miles over approximately 35 years equates to an average of around 5,800 miles annually, which is unusually low for a car of this vintage. Such low mileage could indicate limited use, prolonged storage, or even potential mileage tampering, though the latter cannot be confirmed without further evidence. The absence of any MOTs between 2022 and 2026—despite the vehicle’s age—suggests either consistent non-use or deliberate avoidance of testing, neither of which bodes well for long-term reliability. Without intermediate mileage readings, it is impossible to determine whether the vehicle was driven sporadically or left stationary for extended periods, which would accelerate wear on fluids, seals, and suspension components. Given the sparse MOT history, a prospective buyer should prioritise an independent inspection of critical high-wear areas. The suspension—particularly coil springs, bushes, and dampers—will require thorough examination for fatigue or corrosion, especially given the vehicle’s age. Brake systems, including discs, calipers, and hydraulic lines, should be checked for uneven wear, binding, or fluid leaks, as older vehicles often develop hidden corrosion in brake hardware. Structural integrity is another concern; rust in wheel arches, sills, and the subframe is common in this model and can compromise safety. Finally, the engine bay should be inspected for fluid leaks, belt tension, and general condition, as prolonged inactivity can lead to dried-out or degraded components. The lack of recent MOTs makes it essential to verify service records for oil changes, timing belt replacement (if applicable), and other time-based maintenance.
