2016 Vauxhall Astra 1.4L Petrol · JB16 TJB

A 2016 Vauxhall Astra presenting with four consecutive clean MOT passes and zero advisories or failures on the DVSA record represents a textbook example of sustained roadworthiness, with the most recent test on 12 December 2025 returning a pass with no defects recorded and identical outcomes stretching back to the March 2022 examination. The complete absence of advisory items across four consecutive tests is particularly noteworthy for a vehicle now a decade old, as it indicates that none of the components typically monitored under the MOT regime such as suspension components, braking hardware, exhaust integrity, tyres, or visible underbody corrosion have reached the threshold warranting even an advisory comment. There is no evidence of chronic fluid leaks, deteriorating brake lines, coil spring fatigue, or mounting rust issues that frequently surface on Astras of this generation. For a prospective buyer, this clean slate provides a strong baseline of mechanical integrity, but it should still be regarded as a snapshot at the time of test rather than a guarantee of present condition. The recorded mileage of 27,024 miles against a ten-year vehicle age equates to an average annual accumulation of roughly 2,702 miles, which is substantially below the typical mileage for a privately owned Astra of this vintage. This pattern is consistent with either a second or third household car used only for occasional errands, a vehicle that has spent considerable periods garaged and largely stationary, or potentially a mileage that has been artificially capped. From a mechanical standpoint, very low annual mileage carries its own set of well-known risks that diverge from those of a high-mileage example; components such as the timing chain tensioner, oil pump, brake caliper slide pins, and various rubber seals and gaiters can suffer from lack of regular use rather than wear, and a 12V battery that has not been maintained on a conditioner during extended standing periods is likely to have reduced service life. The four MOT tests themselves span just over three and a half years, yet cover only a handful of thousand additional miles, which is worth probing further by checking V5C service history entries against the recorded mileages to verify the figure has not been clocked or incorrectly logged. Given the conspicuous absence of any flagged components, the inspection priorities for a test drive should pivot toward the items that low-mileage and intermittently used vehicles most commonly struggle with. On the road, listen carefully for any diesel-style rattle or hesitation from cold start indicative of timing chain stretch if this is the 1.4 turbo petrol unit, and observe the exhaust for excessive smoke on initial startup that could point to valve stem seal degradation from infrequent use. The brakes should be tested progressively from low speed, paying particular attention to any binding or uneven pulling that suggests seized caliper slide pins or pistons, both common after long standing periods. Over speed bumps and uneven surfaces, listen for clonks, knocks, or rear suspension knocking from the torsion beam axle, which is a known weakness on the Astra K platform even at modest mileages, and feel for any vagueness or wander from the steering that could indicate worn inner track rod ends or top mount deterioration. A physical inspection beneath the vehicle is equally important given that the MOT record contains no advisories relating to underbody corrosion. Examine the subframe mounting points, suspension arm joints, and brake pipe runs along the chassis rails for any surface rust, particularly around the rear axle mounting area which has historically been a focal point for corrosion on Astras of this era. Check that all fluid levels are at maximum on a cold engine, as low-mileage cars frequently exhibit oil consumption if the vehicle has been left standing for prolonged intervals between short journeys. The tyres should be inspected not only for tread depth but for signs of flat-spotting, sidewall cracking, or perished rubber consistent with age rather than wear, as a ten-year-old set of original tyres would now be well past their safe service life regardless of remaining tread. Finally, verify the service history stamps and timing chain replacement interval against the recorded mileage, since the absence of documented maintenance alongside such low annual usage could mean critical periodic services have been missed or skipped.
