2007 Vauxhall Astra 1.7L Diesel · KC56 CSZ

Covering close to 186,065 miles across nineteen years, this Vauxhall Astra presents a notably sparse MOT history, with only three recorded tests since 2022 after what appears to be a significant period off the road. The most recent test on 8 February 2023 returned a clean pass with no advisories or defects recorded, matching the prior pass dated 15 February 2022. The intervening failure on 12 February 2022, where no specific components were flagged as defective, suggests the failure was likely related to administrative or procedural matters rather than a mechanical issue, though this cannot be confirmed without additional detail. The absence of any recorded advisories over the visible test window points to either a recent rectification of prior wear items or a prolonged standing period followed by recommissioning work, which a buyer should investigate further. Mileage accumulation appears broadly typical for the vehicle's age, averaging roughly 9,793 miles per year, though the test record reveals an apparent gap in MOT coverage prior to February 2022. Under DVSA regulations, vehicles manufactured before 1960 or first registered over forty years ago are exempt from MOT testing, but as a 2007 model, this Astra would have required annual testing from its third anniversary onwards, meaning there may be unrecorded test history or extended periods where the vehicle was either off the road or untaxed. Any substantial lay-up periods can compromise mechanical condition through degraded rubber seals, dried grease in suspension joints, oxidised brake fluid, and moisture ingress into the drivetrain, all of which warrant close inspection regardless of the clean MOT paper trail. Equally, if the mileage is genuinely continuous at this rate for nineteen years, the engine, clutch, and turbo components (if applicable) will have absorbed considerable wear commensurate with high-mileage diesel or petrol endurance. Given the mileage and age, attention during a pre-purchase inspection should focus on the suspension and steering linkages, particularly the front lower wishbones, anti-roll bar drop links, and coil springs, which are known wear items on the Astra H platform at this mileage threshold. Listen for clonking noises over speed bumps or uneven surfaces, which typically indicate worn bushes or top mount bearings, and check for uneven tyre wear which often points to compromised suspension geometry. The braking system should be evaluated for spongy pedal feel, which on a high-mileage vehicle can signify perished rear brake flex hoses or corroded brake pipes running along the underbody and subframe, particularly given the road salt exposure typical of UK winters. Inspect the discs and calipers for binding, uneven pad wear, and any scoring on the disc surface, and verify the handbrake holds effectively on an incline. Under the bonnet, this Astra is likely to exhibit some degree of oil seepage from the cam cover gasket or valve cover, which is characteristic of high-mileage GM units of this era, and a slight misting from the oil filler cap during cold starts should not be considered alarming. However, any evidence of active dripping onto the exhaust manifold, fresh residue around the sump plug, or significant blue smoke under acceleration could indicate internal engine wear requiring costly remedial work. On a test drive, observe for clutch slip under load in fourth or fifth gear, excessive vibration through the steering wheel at speed which may indicate worn wishbone bushes or a failing wheel bearing, and any hesitation or misfire suggesting ignition coil or injector ageing. Finally, examine the exhaust system and underbody for corrosion, particularly around the rear axle, subframe mounting points, and brake line junctions, as structural integrity in these areas is a common MOT failure point on Astra H models approaching the two-decade mark.
