2002 BMW X5 2.9L Diesel · L5 HKW

The vehicle presents a concerning maintenance trend that appears to be worsening as the mileage increases. While the car has passed its tests, the December 2021 MOT at 202,147 miles shows a significant accumulation of advisory items compared to previous years. The tester flagged multiple corroded brake pipes across the front and rear, alongside a noisy nearside front wheel bearing and play in the nearside front lower suspension arm ball joint. These issues suggest that while the vehicle remains legal, the degradation of critical braking and suspension components is accelerating. The mileage accumulation is consistent with a vehicle of this age, averaging approximately 8,400 miles per year. The records show a steady progression from 90,886 miles in September 2008 to 202,147 miles in December 2021. However, there is a significant gap in the data, as no MOT records are provided after the December 2021 test. Given that today is July 2026, the vehicle is currently overdue for an MOT by more than four years, which is a critical red flag regarding its current roadworthiness and legal status. A prospective buyer must prioritize a thorough inspection of the braking system and chassis integrity. The recurring advisories for corroded brake pipes in 2018 and 2021, combined with the deteriorated brake hose noted in December 2020, indicate a pattern of fluid line degradation that could lead to sudden failure. The history also shows frequent issues with suspension components, including ball joints, links, and bushes, which are common on high-mileage X5 models but require immediate verification to ensure they have been replaced rather than merely monitored. Further attention should be paid to the drivetrain and cooling systems. The November 2019 report noted a severely deteriorated nearside front outer drive shaft CV boot, and the October 2016 test recorded an oil leak. Because the most recent recorded data is several years old, the condition of these components, along with the potential for further structural corrosion and rubber perishability, cannot be assumed to be stable. A comprehensive mechanical survey is essential to determine if the previous owner's habit of addressing only minimum requirements has left the vehicle prone to imminent mechanical failure.
