2004 KIA Cerato 1.6L Petrol · LB54 AKY

This Kia Cerato has demonstrated an erratic but ultimately stable roadworthiness pattern over the past two years, with the most recent MOT test on 2025-01-30 confirming pass status at 41,757 miles. The repeated fail-to-pass cycle in January 2025—just four days apart—suggests a procedural anomaly rather than a mechanical trend, as no defects were recorded on either occasion. The preceding 2024 test cycle followed the same pattern, with a fail on 2024-01-31 and a pass on 2024-02-01 at nearly identical mileages (38,629 and 38,633). While this inconsistency raises questions about administrative oversight, the absence of recurring mechanical advisories or failures implies the vehicle has not experienced persistent structural or safety-critical issues during these tests. The recorded mileage of 41,757 miles over 22 years—approximately 1,900 miles annually—is unusually low for a vehicle of this age, suggesting prolonged periods of inactivity or very light use. The gaps between tests are also notable: the 2023 pass at 32,153 miles indicates a 6,500-mile interval before the next fail, while the 2024 cycle spanned just 34 miles between tests. Such minimal mileage accumulation between MOTs could imply the vehicle was either stored or driven sporadically, which may have mitigated some wear but also allowed for potential corrosion or component degradation from prolonged exposure. The lack of advisories in any test suggests no critical failures were overlooked, but the irregular testing pattern warrants scrutiny of components typically affected by low-mileage neglect, such as suspension bushes and fluid levels. Given the absence of specific defect codes in the MOT history, the primary focus for an in-person inspection should centre on the vehicle’s structural integrity and components prone to deterioration under low-mileage conditions. The suspension—particularly rear bushes and coil springs—should be examined for dry rot or excessive play, as prolonged static loading can accelerate wear. Brake discs and calipers, while not explicitly flagged, should be checked for uneven wear or binding, especially if the vehicle was stored with brakes applied. Corrosion is another critical concern; inspect wheel arches, subframes, and exhaust systems for pitting or perforation, as rust can compromise structural integrity without immediate failure. Finally, verify fluid levels (brakes, power steering, coolant) and condition (transmission, differential), as stagnation can lead to contamination or degradation over time. The lack of advisories does not preclude these issues, and a thorough mechanical assessment is essential to confirm the vehicle’s true condition.
