The exhaust system also warrants close inspection, given the 2024 major failure for an insecure and broken component. With the Brera being a transverse V6 layout, the front downpipe and heat shielding should be checked for corrosion and security, and the system listened for blowing noises, rattles over bumps, or smells of exhaust gases inside the cabin indicating a failed manifold or front section joint. The recurring central front oil leak advisory is another area to investigate, as Alfa Romeo 3.2 V6 units are particularly prone to cam cover gasket seepage and rear main or sump gasket issues that can worsen progressively. On a test drive, listen for any increase in engine ticking or ticking that intensifies at idle, and check the underside of the engine bay and undertray for fresh oil staining or dampness. A standing vehicle with low mileage should also be taken for a brisk drive to confirm that brakes bite cleanly without shudder or pulling, that the handbrake holds effectively on an incline, and that the suspension is free of clonks or knocking over uneven surfaces, all of which would suggest seized calipers or perished bushes rather than straightforward wear. Finally, verify the service book history to confirm time-based items such as coolant, brake fluid, gearbox oil and timing belt replacement have been addressed on a calendar basis, and ask for evidence of recent battery replacement, as a 17-year-old original unit would almost certainly be at the end of its service life.
