2010 Fiat Ducato 3.0L Diesel · LC10 VLR

A clear pattern of front-end wear has emerged across the MOT history of this Fiat Ducato, with brake and drivetrain components repeatedly flagged in successive tests despite the vehicle never recording a failure. The front brake discs were noted as pitted or scored in mid-2024, accompanied by thin front pads at the same test, and while the discs were not considered seriously weakened, this combination points to genuine wear that will likely demand attention in the near term. More recently, an advisory oil leak was logged in 2023 and has reappeared at both the 2025 and 2026 tests, suggesting a persistent seep that has not resolved itself. The 2026 pass also flagged a severely deteriorated nearside CV joint boot, which is a notable item given the advisory classification sits below a failure but indicates the protective rubber is splitting and will allow ingress of dirt and moisture if not replaced. Both headlamp lenses were recorded as slightly defective at the 2025 and 2026 tests, and a windscreen chip has been consistently noted, though these remain minor items rather than structural concerns. Overall, the trajectory is one of accumulating minor defects rather than outright mechanical deterioration, but the trend warrants scrutiny. Against the vehicle's sixteen-year age, the recorded mileage of 50,855 miles equates to an annual average of roughly 3,180 miles, which is substantially below typical usage for a commercial van of this type. The testing record shows consistent annual MOTs from 2019 onwards with no significant gaps in testing, implying the vehicle has been kept on the road continuously. Such low annual mileage on a Ducato, which is generally a working vehicle, often indicates either light domestic use, long periods of stationary storage between jobs, or possibly use as a private camper conversion rather than sustained commercial operation. Mechanically, this usage profile tends to preserve major drivetrain components but can accelerate rubber deterioration, brake disc corrosion due to infrequent use, and oil seal hardening, the latter potentially relevant to the recurring oil leak advisory. Standing periods also tend to degrade CV boots and suspension bushes through dry rot, which ties in with the deteriorated boot flagged this year. For a prospective buyer, the priority inspection areas are the front braking system and the persistent oil leak. On a test drive, listen for any grinding or pulsation through the brake pedal, as the pitted front discs noted in 2024 will have continued to wear and may now be close to the minimum thickness; uneven braking pull to one side under firm pedal pressure would also indicate caliper or hydraulic issues. Inspect the underside of the engine and gearbox for fresh oil residue, particularly around the sump gasket, camshaft seal, and any oil cooler lines, and check the oil level on the dipstick for signs of depletion between services. The nearside CV boot should be physically examined for splits or grease loss, and during a test drive listen for a clicking or knocking from the front wheel area when turning at low speed, which would indicate the joint has already been contaminated. Given the low annual mileage, also check for stiff or seized handbrake mechanism, surface corrosion on brake discs visible through the wheels, and any signs of perished suspension bushes or drop links by pushing down firmly on each corner and listening for delayed recovery or clonking noises over speed humps. A compression test of the engine and a thorough inspection of the timing belt replacement history would also be advisable given the vehicle's age, even though neither item appears in the MOT record.
