2004 BMW 3 Series 2.0L Diesel · LV04 USN

The 2004 BMW 3 Series presents a stable roadworthiness record over the past seven years, with no defects recorded across five consecutive MOT tests, the most recent of which took place in November 2023 at 151,196 miles. This consistency suggests the vehicle has been maintained to a high standard, at least in terms of meeting DVSA minimum requirements. The absence of advisories or failures in the latest test—now over two and a half years old—implies no immediate mechanical red flags, though the extended gap since the last inspection (26 months) raises questions about whether the vehicle has been driven regularly or stored. Without any recorded issues, there is no evidence of worsening problems, but the lack of advisories could also indicate that the tester either overlooked subtle wear or that the car has been kept in excellent condition. The mileage accumulation aligns closely with typical usage for a vehicle of this age, averaging around 6,873 miles per year. The incremental increases between tests—1,558 miles between November 2022 and 2023, 2,125 miles between 2021 and 2022—suggest consistent but not excessive driving. The gap between the May 2019 and November 2020 tests (14,985 miles over 17 months) is the most notable, potentially indicating a period of reduced use or storage. This pattern does not necessarily signal neglect, but it does mean the suspension components, such as coil springs and bushings, may have seen less dynamic stress than in a higher-mileage vehicle. The brakes, given the lack of recorded issues, appear to have been serviced appropriately, though binding calipers or uneven wear could still develop over time. For a prospective buyer, the primary focus should be on components not routinely checked during an MOT, particularly the suspension and drivetrain. The absence of recorded faults does not guarantee the absence of wear—inspect the condition of the coil springs for sagging or corrosion, and check the bushings for hardening or cracks. The rear brakes should be tested for binding, as this is a common issue in BMWs of this era, and the brake discs should be examined for uneven wear or scoring. Structural integrity is also critical; look for signs of corrosion in the sills, wheel arches, and exhaust mounts, as well as any signs of previous accident damage, particularly around the front subframe. Given the vehicle’s age, a thorough fluid check—brake, coolant, and differential—is essential, as leaks or degraded fluids can lead to costly failures.
