2005 Honda Accord 2.2L Diesel · MV05 XAA

A persistent pattern of suspension degradation, deteriorating headlamp clarity, and recent braking system faults defines the mechanical history of this vehicle. Although it secured a pass on 23 January 2025, this was only achieved after a failure the previous day due to an excessively binding offside front service brake, and the vehicle was still cleared with advisories for a binding offside rear brake and ongoing play in the rear anti-roll bar assembly. This cycle of failing initial tests for safety-critical components—including a dangerous detached anti-roll bar linkage in 2022, split constant velocity boots, and worn suspension bushes in 2024—indicates that wear-and-tear items frequently reach the point of MOT failure before being addressed. The overall trend shows a vehicle where rubber components and chassis linkages are steadily reaching the end of their service life. With 111,211 miles recorded over its 21-year lifespan, the vehicle has averaged approximately 5,296 miles per year. While this represents relatively low annual usage, the vehicle's age is a significant mechanical factor. Low-mileage older vehicles often suffer from age-related degradation of rubber and elastomeric components rather than pure mechanical wear. This is clearly reflected in the historical failures for perished ball joint dust covers, split drive shaft boots, and deteriorating suspension bushes. The consistent but low annual mileage suggests the vehicle has been subjected to regular short trips or periods of inactivity, which can accelerate the seizing of brake calipers and the deterioration of suspension components. When conducting a physical inspection and test drive, a prospective buyer must pay close attention to the suspension and steering systems. Listen for distinct knocking, rattling, or clicking noises when driving over uneven road surfaces or speed bumps, which would point to the unresolved play in the offside rear anti-roll bar linkage and worn D-bush, or potential play in the steering rack inner joints. During cornering and braking, feel for any vagueness in the steering or a tendency for the vehicle to wander, which could indicate that the front suspension arms or steering rack inner joints require attention. Additionally, inspect the front drive shafts to ensure the previously replaced offside front outer constant velocity boot is secure and not leaking grease. The braking system requires rigorous evaluation during the road test. Check for any pulling to one side under braking, a hard or spongy brake pedal, or a noticeable resistance to rolling, which are classic symptoms of the binding calipers flagged on both the front and rear axles in the most recent test cycle. After the test drive, check for excessive heat radiating from the offside wheels, which confirms a binding caliper. Visually inspect the front headlamps, as both lenses have a long history of oxidation and reduced light intensity; ensure they are clear and free from severe cloudiness that could impair night-time visibility. Finally, verify the security of the front bumper, which was previously flagged as insecure, to ensure it has been properly fastened to the vehicle structure.
