A critical failure of the nearside rear suspension arm attachment bracket and broken toe arm in early 2023 marks the most significant mechanical risk in this vehicle's history. While the car subsequently passed its test on February 9, 2023, the dangerous nature of that specific structural failure indicates a vulnerability in the rear axle geometry. Prior to this, the vehicle maintained a relatively stable record with several clean passes between 2018 and 2020, though the more recent trend shows an emergence of more serious mechanical defects. With 165,226 miles recorded over eighteen years, the vehicle has averaged approximately 9,179 miles per year, which is consistent with typical usage for a luxury saloon of this era. This level of accumulation suggests a steady rate of wear on high-stress components, particularly the drivetrain and complex suspension systems. The gap in testing between May 2021 and January 2023 is notable, as it may have contributed to the undetected deterioration of the rear suspension components that led to the dangerous failure. During a test drive, particular attention must be paid to the rear axle stability and alignment. Listen for any unusual knocks or clunks when traversing uneven surfaces and feel for any steering pull or instability at motorway speeds, which could indicate that the replacement of the broken toe arm was not accompanied by a full four-wheel alignment. The presence of a recorded exhaust leak in early 2023 should be verified by checking for any audible puffing or hissing sounds under acceleration, as well as inspecting the exhaust system for signs of corrosion or poor-quality weld repairs. The history of repeated advisories for worn rear tyres across multiple years suggests a potential issue with rear axle tracking or camber, which can lead to accelerated edge wear. Inspect the current tread depth and look for uneven wear patterns on the inner or outer shoulders of the rear tyres. Finally, ensure the front registration plate has been replaced or restored, as its deterioration was flagged as a recurring advisory in the most recent records.
