2006 Nissan Note 1.4L Petrol · OV56 YNP

A recurring pattern of exhaust mounting advisories and a steering column joint wear note define the mechanical history of this 2006 Nissan Note, with all five recorded MOT tests resulting in a pass. The most recent examination on 16 June 2026 recorded a defective exhaust mounting, marking the second consecutive year this component has been flagged after a similar advisory on 20 June 2024. The intervening tests in 2022 and 2025 returned clean pass certificates with no defects noted, while the 2023 test recorded slight wear or play in the steering column universal joint. None of the advisories have yet escalated to failure status, but the repeat exhaust mounting issue indicates a component that has not been permanently rectified between tests, which is worth scrutinising carefully at the time of inspection. With five tests recorded over a four-year window and a current odometer reading of 135,970 miles, the vehicle has averaged roughly 6,800 miles per year across its twenty-year lifespan, which is broadly consistent with typical usage for a car of this age. There are no significant gaps in the testing record to suggest extended periods off the road, and the steady annual progression through the tests indicates consistent operation. From a purely mechanical standpoint, this level of mileage on a vehicle of this vintage places meaningful demand on the typical consumable wear items, including suspension components, brake friction materials, and drivetrain mounts, although nothing in the recorded history directly flags these areas beyond the steering joint advisory. For a prospective buyer, the priority inspection points should centre on the steering and exhaust systems, both of which have generated advisories. The steering column universal joint wear flagged in 2023 should be re-evaluated by turning the wheel fully lock to lock with the engine running and listening for any clonking, clicking, or notchiness through the column, particularly at the extremes of lock. On the road, pay attention to any play or slack in the steering response at higher speeds, which would suggest the joint wear has progressed. The exhaust mounting defect should be physically inspected by pushing and lifting the tailpipe and intermediate pipe sections to check for excessive movement, listening for rattling under idle or gentle acceleration, and examining the rubber hangers for cracking, separation, or perished rubber. A thorough test drive should also include careful attention to suspension behaviour over uneven surfaces, as a vehicle of this mileage and age commonly develops worn bushes, weakened coil springs, or tired shock absorbers that have not yet reached advisory threshold. Listen for knocking or clonking from the front end over speed bumps and listen for any creaking from the rear suspension over undulating roads, which can indicate deteriorated bushes. Check for any pulling to one side under braking, suggesting uneven pad wear or a binding caliper, and inspect the underside of the vehicle for any fresh oil weeping from the engine or transmission. Finally, confirm the exhaust mounting advisory from the most recent test has been properly rectified, as a recurring issue left unaddressed can lead to exhaust system stress fractures and a subsequent test failure.
