2004 Vauxhall Astra 1.7L Diesel · PA04 HYY

Chronic corrosion of the brake pipes and intermittent failures of critical safety components define the mechanical history of this vehicle. There is a recurring pattern of brake pipe corrosion noted from 2019 through 2021, alongside a dangerous failure of the anti-roll bar linkage in 2019 and dangerous lighting failures in 2020. While the vehicle passed its last recorded test on 11 September 2023, the history shows a trend of multiple failures and repeated advisories regarding structural and safety components. With 261,755 miles recorded over 22 years, the vehicle has averaged approximately 11,898 miles per year. This usage rate is typical for its age, but the high absolute mileage indicates significant cumulative wear on the drivetrain, engine internals, and all rubber-mounted suspension components. Prospective buyers should consider that components reaching the end of their natural service life are more likely to fail at this mileage threshold. Particular attention must be paid to the braking system and chassis. The repeated advisories for corroded brake pipes, specifically the nearside rear and those running from front to rear, suggest a persistent issue with oxidation. During a physical inspection, check for the presence of grease or underseal applied to the pipes to mask corrosion. The parking brake was also flagged for requiring service or adjustment in 2021, so the lever travel and holding power should be rigorously tested on an incline. The suspension and steering systems require scrutiny due to the previous dangerous failure of the anti-roll bar linkage and subsequent play in the ball joints. On a test drive, listen for knocking or clunking sounds when traversing uneven surfaces or during low-speed cornering, which would indicate further wear in the suspension bushes or linkages. Additionally, verify the operation of all exterior lighting and the condition of the headlamp lenses, as these have been recurring points of failure and advisories in the most recent records.
