2017 MINI John Cooper Works 2.0L Petrol · PH04 AHO

A 2017 MINI John Cooper Works with a completely clean DVSA MOT history across the last five tests is an unusually strong roadworthiness signal, particularly given the performance-orientated nature of the vehicle and its nine-year service life. The most recent examination on 22 October 2025 was passed with no defects recorded, and this follows identical clean passes on 30 October 2024, 7 November 2023, 21 April 2023, and 27 April 2022. A JCW is a hot hatch with uprated suspension, brakes, and a high-output turbocharged engine, so components such as brake discs, pads, coil springs, and anti-roll bar links tend to attract advisories on heavily used examples; the complete absence of any advisory or failure across five consecutive tests suggests this particular car has not been subjected to the level of wear one might typically expect, and the vehicle has consistently met the minimum statutory safety and emissions thresholds at each annual check. The recorded mileage of 35,585 miles against a 2017 registration equates to an annual average of approximately 3,954 miles, which is notably below the typical mileage band for a car of this age. The MOT record shows a testing frequency of roughly twelve months between visits, with no multi-year gaps that would suggest the vehicle was off the road and therefore potentially suffering from the typical issues associated with long-term standing, such as brake disc corrosion, perished rubber components, or moisture ingress in the braking and fuel systems. Equally, there are no sudden large jumps in mileage between tests that would indicate a long motorway accumulation phase followed by light use. The combination of consistently low annual mileage and regular annual testing points to a vehicle that has been in continuous but light service, which mechanically means less wear on friction components, less stress on the drivetrain, and reduced exposure to harsh road conditions that accelerate corrosion. Despite the unblemished MOT record, a prospective buyer should approach the inspection with the specific vulnerabilities of the JCW in mind, as the MOT standard is a minimum threshold rather than a comprehensive condition report. The JCW uses a stiffer suspension setup with bespoke dampers, coil springs, and anti-roll bar links compared with the standard Cooper S, and even at this modest mileage the bushes and drop links can begin to show wear. On a test drive, listen for clonking or knocking from the front suspension over speed bumps and uneven surfaces, and feel for any vagueness in the steering or slight tramlining that could indicate worn top mounts or wishbone bushes. The uprated Brembo or sports brake package fitted to JCW models should be inspected for any judder through the steering wheel under heavy braking, which would suggest disc warping, and the caliper slide pins should be checked to ensure the brakes are releasing cleanly without binding. Given the low recorded mileage, particular attention should also be paid to items that deteriorate more through age and standing time than through use. The tyres should be examined for sidewall cracking or perishing, and the brake discs, while likely having significant material remaining, should be checked for surface corrosion that can occur on lightly driven cars. Under the bonnet, the B48 turbocharged engine used in this generation should be inspected for any oil seepage from the valve cover gasket, oil filter housing, or turbo oil feed lines, and a cold start should reveal any timing chain rattle or rough idle that would warrant further investigation. Finally, a borescope inspection via the oil filler cap and a thorough check of the coolant and oil condition would be prudent, as cars used predominantly for short journeys can develop internal carbon build-up and coolant degradation that the MOT test would not detect.
