2012 Toyota Aygo 1.0L Petrol · PN12 XKF

A fourteen-year-old Toyota Aygo carrying the cumulative weight of 74,227 miles and displaying a clear, recurring pattern of underbody corrosion advisories presents a specific mechanical profile that any buyer must weigh carefully. Across consecutive MOT examinations in 2024, 2025, and most recently on 20 February 2026, the vehicle has passed every test, yet each of those recent examinations has logged advisories concerning corrosion to the front subframe, the rear subframe mounting prescribed areas, and the rear brake pipes. The 2026 pass in particular highlights a corroding front subframe classified as not seriously weakened, alongside corrosion to both rear subframe mounting points and a nearside rear brake pipe coated in grease or another material. This represents a steady, documented progression of structural surface oxidation rather than a sudden deterioration. Earlier passes in 2022 and 2023 returned no significant corrosion advisories, with only a minor deteriorated ball joint dust cover and a slightly distorted offside front inner road wheel recorded, which suggests the corrosion picture has genuinely worsened over the last three test cycles. The recorded usage profile points to a consistently lightly driven vehicle. Annual mileage works out at roughly 5,302 miles, which is well below the typical accumulation rate for a city car of this age and considerably under the national fleet average. MOT intervals have remained strictly annual with no gaps in testing history, confirming the vehicle has been kept on the road continuously rather than laid up in storage. While low annual mileage reduces wear on major drivetrain and engine components, it also tends to accelerate underbody corrosion on vehicles exposed to winter road salts, as short journeys do not allow components to dry out thoroughly. The combination of low annual mileage and persistent salt exposure in the recent advisories is fully consistent with the corrosion pattern observed. For a prospective buyer, the priority inspection points are the underbody structural members and the brake hydraulic circuit. The Aygo should be examined on a ramp or over a pit, paying particular attention to the front subframe and the rear subframe mounting areas for any deep scaling, flaking, or perforation that could push the corrosion beyond the current advisory threshold into MOT failure territory. The rear brake pipes on both sides must be inspected along their full length, including the sections concealed behind the rear axle, for advanced corrosion that may have penetrated beneath the grease coating noted by testers. On the road, the brake pedal should be felt for any sponginess suggesting pipe degradation, and the car should be driven over uneven surfaces with the windows down to listen for any clonks, rattles, or knocking from the front subframe or rear mounting points that might indicate the corrosion has advanced to a point where components are beginning to move under load. Further checks should concentrate on the suspension and tyre condition flagged in the 2022 and 2024 tests. The deteriorated offside front lower suspension arm ball joint dust cover noted in 2022 should be re-inspected by physically examining the boot for tears or grease loss, as a perished cover allows water ingress and rapid joint wear. The nearside front tyre has been flagged twice for edge wear on the legal limit, which is often indicative of incorrect tracking, worn suspension bushes, or bent geometry components, so the steering should be tested for any pulling to the left under braking or acceleration. The offside front inner road wheel distortion from 2022 also warrants a visual check, as a dented or cracked inner rim can cause persistent vibration through the steering wheel at speed. Finally, given the structural advisories, a confirmation that the vehicle has not been previously accident-damaged or poorly repaired in the underbody areas would be prudent before committing to purchase.
