2012 BMW 3 Series 2.0L Petrol · R2 KTR

The vehicle is currently roadworthy, having passed its most recent MOT test on 2025-05-09 at 69,616 miles with no defects recorded. However, the maintenance trend shows minor instability: the car failed its previous test on 2025-05-06 at 69,585 miles, indicating unresolved issues that were rectified just three days later. This suggests either a recurring problem or a one-off fault that required immediate attention, though the absence of detailed defect descriptions limits certainty. The mileage pattern is notably low for a 14-year-old vehicle, averaging approximately 4,973 miles per year. This aligns with periods of inactivity, as evidenced by the 11-month gap between the 2023 and 2024 tests (55,206 to 63,823 miles), during which only 8,617 miles were accumulated. The lack of consistent annual testing—particularly the 18-month interval between the 2022 and 2023 tests—may reflect reduced usage or ownership changes, but the low annual mileage itself implies minimal wear on high-mileage-dependent components like brakes and suspension. The MOT history does not specify recurring mechanical faults, but the single failure in May 2025 warrants scrutiny of components prone to intermittent issues. Binding rear brakes, corrosion in suspension joints, or degraded coil springs could explain the brief failure, as these are common in older BMW 3 Series models. The absence of structural advisories in recent tests suggests no severe rust or chassis damage, but the low mileage may mask corrosion in less-exposed areas. A buyer should prioritize inspecting the rear brake system for binding or uneven wear, check suspension bushes and coil springs for stiffness or leaks, and examine wheel arches and sills for hidden corrosion. Given the vehicle’s age and low mileage, verifying service records for timing belt replacement (critical for 2012 BMWs) and checking for dashboard warning lights during operation would further clarify its mechanical health. The lack of persistent advisories indicates diligent upkeep, but the recent failure highlights the need for a thorough mechanical assessment before purchase.
