2008 Fiat Doblo 1.9L Diesel · RJ58 ACV

The most recent MOT, conducted on 17 November 2021, was passed but returned three advisories: the nearside front tyre was close to the legal tread limit and showing edge‑wear, the off‑side front tyre exhibited similar inner‑edge wear, and the off‑side front steering rack displayed slight free play at the wheel. With only a single MOT record available, the trend cannot be charted over time, but the presence of wear‑related advisories suggests that routine maintenance has been adequate to keep the vehicle roadworthy while components are approaching the end of their service life. At 128,398 miles the 2008 Fiat Doblò averages roughly 7,100 miles per year, which sits comfortably within the typical usage envelope for a vehicle of this age. The mileage does not indicate excessive short‑term abuse, yet the relatively modest annual distance also hints that the car may have spent periods of inactivity, a factor that can accelerate corrosion of suspension bushings, brake components and battery plates. The cumulative mileage is sufficient to have consumed the original wear items such as brake pads, clutch discs and engine seals, so their condition should be verified. When inspecting the vehicle, give particular attention to the front tyres; the tread depth should be measured on all four corners and any uneven wear, especially on the inner edges, should be correlated with the condition of the front suspension bushes, ball joints and the steering rack. During a test drive listen for a loose or vague feeling in the steering column, a clunk when turning the wheel at low speed, or any vibration that may betray worn tie‑rod ends or excessive play in the rack. The steering rack free play noted in the MOT should be re‑checked by a qualified technician, and if the play exceeds the manufacturer’s specification the rack may need adjustment, bush replacement or a full rebuild. The tyres, given their proximity to the legal limit, should be replaced promptly to avoid a failure on the next MOT and to restore optimal grip, particularly in wet conditions. Beyond the specific advisories, the Doblò’s age warrants a comprehensive age‑related inspection. Verify the condition of the 12‑volt battery, checking for sulphation and ensuring it holds charge above 12.6 V after a rest; a battery older than ten years often requires replacement regardless of apparent performance. Examine the brake discs for surface rust, scoring or glazing, and confirm that the pads have sufficient material left; standing for long periods can cause disc corrosion that leads to uneven pad wear or brake shudder. Inspect all suspension components—coil springs, shock absorbers, and rubber bushings—for cracks, leaks or excessive play, as rubber deteriorates with time even on low‑mileage cars. Finally, confirm that the service history shows regular oil and filter changes, coolant flushes and timing belt (or chain) servicing in accordance with Fiat’s schedule, because calendar‑based fluid degradation can cause internal wear even when the car is not driven heavily. A thorough visual and functional check of these items will give a prospective buyer confidence in the Doblò’s mechanical soundness and highlight any imminent maintenance that should be budgeted for.
