2012 MINI 1.6L Diesel · RJ61 XPX

The vehicle remains roadworthy, but the maintenance trend shows a shift toward reactive repairs rather than preventative care. The most recent MOT test in January 2025 at 149,272 miles identified several mechanical issues including thin front brake pads, pitted brake discs, and a failing offside front shock absorber. This represents a regression from the clean records seen in 2022 and 2023, indicating that components are now reaching the end of life simultaneously. At 149,272 miles over 14 years, the car has averaged approximately 10,600 miles per year, which aligns closely with typical UK usage for its age. The mileage accumulation is consistent, with roughly 6,500 miles driven between the January 2023 and January 2024 tests, and another 6,600 miles leading into the 2025 inspection. This steady rate of use puts constant stress on the suspension and braking systems, which explains the recurring defects noted in later tests. A buyer must conduct a close inspection of the suspension geometry, as the January 2024 failure and pass highlighted worn anti-roll bar bushes and Macpherson strut pins across all four corners. While these were rectified at the time, the age of the vehicle suggests other rubber components are likely perished elsewhere. The 2025 advisory regarding the reduced damping effect on the offside front shock absorber requires immediate attention as it will lead to uneven tyre wear and compromised vehicle handling. The braking system also requires scrutiny. The January 2025 tester flagged thin pads and scored discs on both front and rear axles. Given the mileage has increased significantly since that test, the buyer should verify if these parts were replaced or if the wear has progressed further. Check for any signs of fluid leaks or binding calipers to ensure the high-mileage environment has not caused underlying hydraulic failures.
