Hagerty’s C70 guide likewise warns the roof electrics (motors, regulators) deserve scrutiny. Blocked drains plus damp boot liners equal corroded connectors and mouldy trim.

Hagerty’s C70 at 30 buying advice says rust is rare compared with its 850-era rivals but is emphatic that wheel arches, sills and subframes must be checked, especially on early cars. On a 25-plus-year-old convertible, a straight car is the exception that earns its premium.

The first-generation C70 shares the 850/P80 transverse five-cylinder petrol engines, which are interference designs: a snapped or jumped cambelt stops the engine and typically bends valves and damages pistons. Volvo specified cambelt and tensioner renewal at around 60,000-80,000 miles or five years, and Volvo Owners Club threads describe C70 owners renewing belts late, with tensioner and idler bearing wear the usual warning signs. Belt wear is hidden behind the timing covers, so a missing belt history is the main risk when buying a used C70.
