2004 Ford Transit Connect 1.8L Diesel · SD54 PVU

The most recent MOT test for this 2004 Ford Transit Connect, conducted on 10 November 2021 at 172,737 miles, resulted in a pass with no recorded defects. However, the preceding tests on 25 October 2021 (172,728 miles) and another on the same date (also 172,737 miles) both failed without any defects being logged. This inconsistency suggests either an administrative error in the MOT system or a vehicle that narrowly avoided failing on critical components during those tests. Given the lack of defects in the final pass, there is no evidence of a worsening trend in mechanical condition, but the repeated failures at nearly identical mileages warrant scrutiny of components that commonly fail at this age—particularly brakes, suspension, and exhaust systems—which are not explicitly recorded here. The recorded mileage of 172,737 miles over approximately 22 years equates to an average of around 7,852 miles per year, which is typical for a vehicle of this age. The near-identical mileages across the three MOT tests in late October and early November 2021 indicate minimal driving between tests, which could imply the vehicle was either stored or used sparingly during that period. There are no gaps in the MOT history that suggest prolonged neglect, but the lack of subsequent tests means no data exists to assess whether the vehicle has been maintained or driven regularly since November 2021. Without further records, it is impossible to determine if the vehicle has undergone necessary servicing or if critical components like suspension bushes, coil springs, or brake calipers have degraded further. Given the sparse MOT history, a buyer should prioritise an in-person inspection of high-wear areas that are not always captured in standard MOT tests. Focus on the suspension system—check for worn or cracked bushes on control arms, sway bars, and subframes, as well as sagging or broken coil springs, which are common failure points in vehicles of this age. The braking system should be thoroughly tested for uneven wear on discs, binding calipers, or excessive corrosion, especially if the vehicle has been stationary for extended periods. Examine the underbody for structural rust, particularly around wheel arches, sills, and the rear differential housing, as corrosion can compromise structural integrity. Additionally, inspect the exhaust system for leaks or excessive rust, as failing emissions tests in the past could indicate ongoing issues with catalytic converters or oxygen sensors. Given the lack of recent MOT data, verify the service history for brake fluid changes, timing belt (if applicable), and differential fluid top-ups, as these are critical for long-term reliability.
