2003 Vauxhall Astra 1.6L Petrol · SL03 HZV

A persistent theme across the MOT record is the recurring condition of the front suspension and exhaust system, with multiple advisories and a dangerous failure on the upper MacPherson strut attachment in 2018 and a similar dangerous warning on the front upper strut pin in early 2023. Although the most recent test in January 2023 was a pass, the lingering exhaust leak advisory indicates that the leak has not been rectified and remains a point of concern. Earlier failures also highlighted headlamp aim and main‑beam control issues, suggesting that electrical and lighting components have required attention in the past. At 145,911 mi the car averages just over 6,300 mi per year, a figure that sits comfortably within typical usage for a 23‑year‑old model. The MOT entries show regular annual testing from 2018 through 2023, with a brief gap in 2020‑2021 where no results are recorded, but no evidence of prolonged inactivity. This mileage level implies moderate wear on wear‑items such as bushings, brake pads, tyres and suspension components, and it aligns with the observed need for periodic replacement of those parts. When inspecting the suspension, focus on the front upper MacPherson strut pins and bushes; feel for any looseness or clunking when the car is driven over potholes or speed bumps, and check that the steering remains steady without excessive play. Examine the exhaust system for audible hissing, visible soot around joints, and a noticeable exhaust smell at idle, as the recurring minor leak advisory suggests a deteriorating flexi pipe or cracked pipe that may worsen under load. Verify that both dipped and main beams illuminate correctly and that headlamp aim is within legal limits, as past failures indicate the aim can be significantly off and the main‑beam switch may not extinguish all beams. Finally, confirm that the brake fluid level is above the minimum mark and that the fluid appears clear, given the repeated advisory of low fluid in 2018 and 2019. Inspect the power‑steering ram for any seepage at the joint, and assess tyre condition, especially the rear left tyre which was flagged as perishing in 2018; uneven wear or cracking would warrant replacement. The windscreen damage noted on several occasions should be examined for cracks that could spread, and any remaining coolant low warnings should be cleared by checking the coolant reservoir and ensuring the system is free of leaks. Addressing these specific items will give a realistic picture of the car’s current roadworthiness.
