2003 Toyota Corolla 1.6L Petrol · VU53 BZX

The 2003 Toyota Corolla passed its most recent MOT on 5 November 2025 at 95,823 miles, but the maintenance trend is clearly worsening. After two consecutive clean passes in 2022 and 2023, the 2024 test introduced corrosion advisories on both rear suspension mounting points, and the 2025 test escalated significantly. The tester flagged all four coil springs as corroded, both front tyres as damaged or perishing, rear brake pads wearing thin, and a fluid trace near a recently replaced offside rear brake pipe. This is a marked deterioration in a single year and suggests the car has either been stored for long periods or subjected to conditions accelerating corrosion and rubber degradation. The mileage pattern supports the latter interpretation. At roughly 4,166 miles per year over 23 years, this is exceptionally low annual use. The record shows a gap of nearly two years between the March 2021 test at 84,771 miles and the September 2022 test at 89,023 miles, during which only 4,251 miles were covered. From September 2022 to November 2025, the car added just 6,800 miles over more than three years. Prolonged standing is the most likely explanation for the perished front tyres, corroded coil springs, and deteriorated rubber components. Low mileage alone does not protect a vehicle from age-related decay, and this record confirms that. A buyer should inspect the underside carefully, focusing on the structural integrity of the rear suspension mounting points flagged in 2024 and the condition of all four coil springs noted in 2025. Corroded springs can fracture without warning, particularly on a vehicle of this age. The rear brake system warrants close attention given the recurring advisories: thin pads in 2025, binding nearside front brake in 2021, and deteriorated rear hoses in 2021. The offside rear brake pipe appears to have been replaced recently, yet the tester still noted fluid in the area, so the repair quality should be verified. Front tyres showing cracking or perishing must be replaced before use, regardless of remaining tread depth. The 2021 binding nearside front brake and the 2025 rear brake pad advisory point to a braking system that has not been consistently maintained. A practical inspection should include checking for uneven disc wear, seized caliper slides, and the condition of all flexible hoses. The clean 2022 and 2023 tests suggest the car was in better order not long ago, but the sharp decline in 2024 and 2025 indicates either deferred maintenance or a change in storage conditions. This Corolla is mechanically sound in its core record, but the recent corrosion and brake findings demand a thorough on-site inspection before purchase.
