2017 Suzuki Swift 1.2L Petrol · WG66 WTF

Consistent suspension component deterioration and a history of tyre-related safety failures define the mechanical profile of this Suzuki Swift. While the vehicle successfully passed its most recent MOT on 15 January 2026, the inspection identified severe degradation of the dust covers on both the nearside and offside front suspension arm ball joints. This record indicates a pattern where the vehicle remains functional but requires intervention regarding its primary steering and handling linkages, following a previous failure in 2024 for dangerous tyre tread depletion that necessitated immediate remedial action. Accumulating 111,605 miles over nine years results in a high annual average of approximately 12,401 miles, suggesting the vehicle has been subjected to sustained daily operation rather than short, intermittent journeys. This high-mileage profile places significant stress on the drivetrain and chassis components, which are now operating well beyond the typical wear-in period for a city-oriented vehicle. Prospective buyers should anticipate that high-mileage usage of this nature often accelerates the fatigue of rubber bushings, wheel bearings, and constant velocity joints, which may not always be captured in the annual MOT check but will influence the vehicle's long-term handling characteristics. During the test drive, specific attention must be paid to the front suspension, as the recorded ball joint dust cover deterioration often precedes play in the joints themselves. Listen closely for metallic knocking or clunking noises when traversing uneven road surfaces or speed humps, as these are primary indicators of worn suspension linkages or failing ball joints. Furthermore, ensure the steering remains precise and does not exhibit any vagueness or pulling to one side, which could signify that the suspension geometry has been compromised by the high mileage or that the joints have developed excessive movement since the last inspection. Given the previous failure regarding tyre tread depth, perform a thorough physical inspection of all four tyres to ensure they are not only within legal limits but also free from uneven wear patterns. Uneven wear across the tyre face often points to underlying tracking or alignment issues, which are common in high-mileage vehicles and can lead to premature wear of steering rack components. Verify that the vehicle tracks straight on a flat road surface and that there is no vibration through the steering wheel at motorway speeds, as this could suggest issues with wheel balancing or more significant wear within the drivetrain components that have sustained the vehicle's high-usage history.
